Lakelse mile on “June 1 The Skeena Valley Runners’ Club is hosting its annual ‘‘Lakelse Avenue Mile’? run on Sunday, June 1 at 1 p.m. It’s a mile jaunt along the Terrace main street from the Bavarian Inn to the entrance to McDonald’s. The categories are juniors at 14 and under, and seniors at 15 and older. Runners are asked to enter in three-person mixed teams. Instead of determining winners on oveyall times as they did last year, plans call for order of finish to name the top teams. For example, if one of your team is second, another 9th and the other one 11th, then you have a point total of 22, The team with the lowest point total grabs top spot. The best six teams are eligible for ribbons in each category. There's a $1 fee for each runner, and competitors are ask- ed to register at the Skeena Mall on Friday, May 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m, or Saturday May 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The race is co- sponsored by McDon- ald’s restaurant and all runners will’ get cer- tificates containing their time. Refreshments will also be served right after the race. For more information, phone Sue Walker at 635-9091. Minor ball standings T-BALL CUPE Two CUPE One Wayside Grocery Rudon Enter. Wrestlers off to Japan Four of coach Mike Richey’s Smithers high school wrestlers are off to Japan this July, if they can raise enough money to pay the estimated $2,000 cost. B.C. Champions Craig Roberts and Daryl Simpson, together with Heath Bolster and Leon Poirier were recently selected to a team of B.C.’s 12 best wrestlers under the age of 19. Smithers is the only high school in the pro- vince to place as many as four on the team, For Simpson and Roberts, it’s a return trip as they wrestled in the Orient last year. Richey points out that this tour had been plian- ned for years with an ob- jective of forming a strong B.C. team for the 1987 World Junior Championships which will be hosted by Van- couver. The boys head out on July 5 for two days of training at Simon Fraser University. Then it’s off to Tokyo July 10 with coach Richey. A number of Smithers’ groups and in- dividuals are raising funds to help pay for the trip. However, they have a long way to go in finances, and any area residents interested in helping out should con- | tact coach Richey at Smithers high school.
