Talbot, Chair Councillor M.D. Gates, Co-Chair Youth Task Force RE: Findings - Youth Task Force PURPOSE: The purpose of this report is to inforn members of Council of the Youth Task Force’s findings; to put forward recommendations; and, to determine whether or not the Task Force should be disbanded. BACKGROUND: You will recall that His Worship Mayor Traboulay struck a Task Force at the Council meeting of November 9th, 1992, to review all aspects conceming youth in Port Coquitlam and directed it to report its findings to Council. This action was initiated due to concems raised by residents located in the Hazel Trembath area. The Task Force’s mandate was to review "where we are and where we are going in meeting the needs of our youth". . With that in mind a number of meetings were held. Two meetings were held with the Mary Hill Youth Committee (five youth and seven adults) to discuss the problems and potential remedies to the situation at Hazel Trembath School. The Committee's concerns and recommendations are listed on page 2. A meeting was held with "youth" experts comprising a probation officer, a youth detail constable with the local RCMP, the City’s Teen Programs Coordinator, 2 Reconnect workers, the Coordinator of the Criminal Gang Program and the City’s Parks and Recreation Manager and Deputy Director. The results of this meeting are also listed on page 2. The last meeting was held with Port Coquitlam’s Youth Council. Results of that mesting are listed on page 2. Various other informal meetings were held, including a Public Forum sponsored by CBC Evening News on February 17th, 1993.
