Al0- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 30, 1998 School frowns on girls showing too muc Tank tops, spaghetti straps ‘not appropriate’ By ALEX HAMILTON “BEACH WEAR” isn’t appropriate attire lo wear to school, says Geoff Straker, principal — of Caledonia Secondary school. Straker said he doesn’t want to see anymore low cut dresses and blouses worn by female students or excessive flesh ex- posed in the midriff area, ‘**This isn’t the beach,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s not a holiday. It’s a place of business.”’ Straker said he’s had discussions with teachers and parents about the concern that some young women were not dressed appropriately, so he put the word oul in a newslet- ter. The newsletter states: “We would ask that ‘Beach wear’ not be worn at school. Current fashion seems to dictate that spaghetti straps, low cleavage and bare midriff is the norm...it is not the preferred dress for school,’”’ Chipper getting quieter EFFORTS to muzzle the . noisy chipper in Skeena © Cellulose’s log yard are partly complete and could be finished in January, says a company official. Woods manager Derrick Curtis said the noise has been cut markedly since ear- ly December when a steel plate was installed inside the debarker drum. The piate ensures the spin- ning drum don’t carry logs all the way to the top and then let them fall — some- thing Curtis says producing much of booming noise. “The noise has already dropped off,’’ Curtis said. “You don’t get as many big thunks.’” The next step, he said, will be to coat the outside of the the drum with a putty-like material and = aluminum sheathing. That’s expected to deaden the noise further, Curtis said the putty inaterial is on order and likely won't arrive until sometime in the New Year. He said the company re- jected another option — putting a rubber coating on the inside of the drum. “They can’t guarantee us the rubber won’t fall off and contaminate the chips,’’ he | explained, - Curtis wouldn’t say how much the noise-abating ef- forts are costing. City councillor Olga Power, who lives . within earshot of the chipper on Mountainvista Drive, said the machine seemed a lot quieter last week bul said it still seems sporadic, “It is still a problem to sleep patterns for a lot of people but we're looking - forward to the work with the putty sheathing,’’ she said. “That should help.” Prince Rupert's TES HOTEL Weekend, :Speciat 1-800-663-8150 was THIS TANK TOP worn by a Caledonia student is at the more conservative end of the spectrum of so- called beach wear that has raised eyebrows. Straker said he doesn’t think he’s being = un- reasonable or asking too much of his students. But some students at Caledonia disagree, saying the principal is out of line. “It’s against our rights to express ourseives,’’ said 16- year-old Sara McRae, who was sporting a thin tank top underneath her winter jack- A fun-to-drive coupa that dallvers on acceleration, at a price that won't slaw you down. She said if parents ap- prove of what _ their teenagers are wearing, then why can’t the school? Student Janine Garneau said wearing ‘‘beach wear’, like the spaghetti-strapped tanks top she loves shouldn’t be such a big deal. “Tt’s a public school — we should be allowed to ¥ 1999 PONTIAC SUNFIRE COUPE h skin wear what we want,’ she said. ‘“‘It’s-the fad right now,’’ Male students at the schoo] also disagree with the edict. “It’s discriminatory,”’ said a 17-year-old Grade 12 student who didn't want to reveal his name, “Guys can wear tank tops but girls can’t.”” Straker said he put the word out in the newsletter because this type of clothing offends some people. He said he simply wants students to think more aboul what they wear, He hasn’t had to send any- one home te change because female students haven't been wearing offensive clo- thing in this weather. But Straker is already worried about next spring. You know what's com- ing back into style?’ he asked. ‘‘The tube!” And that’s something he doesn’t want to see gracing his halls next summer. Straker said the school’s code of conduct outlines wearing clothing which reflects the degree of modesty required for a business-like approach to the workplace. But for now, students can- tinue to wear their favorite tank tops and have yet to hear anything about it. + tear spoiler a!
