B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 22, 1995 Edwina celebrates birthday This week I would like to share with you the story of my good friend, Edwina Morin, Edwina Morin (nee Godkin), or Uddic for short, was born in Sas- kaichewan, in the district way out _On'a homestead, miles from Cul- knife. She was born on March 12, 1912 and was raised in Manitoba, six miles of south of Miami. Her father, Harry Godkin was bom in 1883 and Edwina's mother Laura Duvall, was born in 1882 in-Comwall, Ontario,where she grew up, The couple were married in 1908. Edwina’s father’s family came from Ireland, and ber mother’s fa- ther’s side came from France, After Laura received her teacher’s certificate, she taught at the Kingston high school for seven years, receiving a salary of $800 per year, Laura then came west and met Harry Godkin, Ed- wina’s father, and they were married and had six children, Edwina’s parents had one son, Edgar, born in 1921, He died in a ‘hunting accident on the Omineca ’ River. They also had five girls—Anita, 1910, Edwina, 1912, Cynthia, 1919, Henryetta, 1925 and Ruth, 1927. _ When Edwina was six years old, her folks moved back to Morden, Manitoba. In the spring of 1919 the family moved to just over six miles south of Miami, _ Manitoba. And it was here that Edwina grew up and went to school. When Edwina was older she went out to work doing some housekeeping for eight dollars a month ; In 1936 Edwina moved to the Peace ‘River district, 20 miles “west of Dawson Creek. Here she met her future husband. On April 7, 1938, on a beautiful sunny day, Edwina Godkin, be- came Mrs. Ted Morin. Ted and Edwina had six children—a boy, Thomas Edward, who diced _ young, and five girls—Lucille, Vyvianne, Rosie, Helen and Dianne. Three of the girls now live in Dawson Creek and two live bere in Terrace. Edwina moved to Terrace in May, 1993 and has been living at the. Willows Apartments since March 3, 1994, She came to Ter- tace to be near her two daughters Vyvianne Armstrong and Dianne Shaver. Edwina has 21 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. Recently Edwina’s grandson, Dave Armstrong, and his wife Faye, brought her a return ticket to Dawson Creek as an 83rd birthday preseiit. ; Now I will go back just a litile to Edwina’s parent’s ancestors, re A ZEST FOR LIFE has kept Edwina Morin feeling young. Here she celebrates her 83rd birthday. Motorcycle riding and snowmobiling are among her favourite pastimes. In the 15th century her great grandfather was driven out of France because he wouldn’t be- come Catholic. He and his family were Hughenotts. His name was David Duvall, He lived for 50 years in England and then came to the United States. Tf you remember, the U.S. civil war was in 1812, Laura Secord was a cousin of David Duvall. David Duvall moved to Oshawa, Ontario and Edwina’s great grandma, Nancy Irwin, came over from Ireland in 1835 with two sisters, (Jane & Sarah, who remained single). She met and married David Duvall in the year 1838, Edwina’s daughter Rosie still has their wedding certificate and a picture of the two unwed sisters, Now, the son of David and Nancy Duvall, Edgar Duvall, married Mary ‘Annie Markell in Ontario. They had an apple or- chard and eight children—Herb, Art, Ed, Irwin, Bertie, Minnie, Sadie, and Laura, who became Edwina’: smother, Edwina’s great grandfather Joe | Godkin, married and lived near Lake Erie, Ontario. He later died and grandma Godkin married an Oleary. And it was here that Laura Duvall met and married Harry Godkin in 1908—and from here Edwina’s family begins, Now, both Harry and Laura are gone, as are all her siblings, Edwina’s husband, Ted Morin, passed away on September 7, 1991 in Dawson Creek, Edwina says she loves all the beautiful mountains around Ter- race as it reminds her of where she was raised, clase to the Pem- bina Hills, in Manitoba, Edwina has just celebrated her 83 birthday with her family in Terrace. She says she stays young by doing fots of fun things, like riding on a motor bike, going down the ‘‘Cannonball’’ slide at the hotsprings and riding a snow- mobile.
