A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 19, 1995 Home-based banking in works Credit union notes growth ASSETS AND MEMBERSHIPS of the Terrace and District Credit Union grew by 10 per cent last year, indicate audited figures prepared for the institution, It represents a consistent growth trend of the credit union which this year celebrates its Sth an- niversary. _ In terms of dollars, the asset base is now $30.5 million and _ meniberships total more than 4,600, says credit union manager Dennis Brewer. ; The 10 per cent growth is within credil union. projections, he added, In return, the credit union is al- locating to its members $50,000 in extra equity shares based on last year’s performance. That works out to a nine per cent dividend on equity shares amounting to $19,000, a 12 per cent bonus of interest on Plan 24 accounts, 4 one per cent rebate of interest paid on loans and mort- gages and.a 1.5 per cent bonus on term deposits. Brewer attributed growth to a continuing demand for loans and moriga ges. The latter, particularly, is the bread and butter of credit unions, he said. “We're predicting that will continue in 1995, even though in- terest rates are higher than last year,’ Brewer added. As for plans for the next couple of years, the credit union is going to change its computer system to better provide information to em- ployees and customers, That new system is being devel- oped by a company owned by 65 Co-op members to receive shares TERRACE CO-OP members received pood news last night at their annual general meeting. For the first time:since the late 1980s, the co-op board recom- mended a share distribution to members. Each member is to receive in shares two per cent of the value of purchases made at the Co-op last year, says Co-op general manager Ed Berney. . . That means, for instance, ‘a member will receive $200 in shares if the member purchased $10,000 worth of items last year. Berney said the share allocation is good news . because — it represents a continuation of a tum. around in the Co-op's financial fortunes, The Co-op had been experienc- ing yearly operating losses, ‘‘Now there’s a surplus that'll be returned to the members,” said Berney. This year is also the SQth an- niversary of the Terrace Co- operative Association which is part of Federated Co-operatives Lid. Bemey said the Terrace Co-op isn’t planniag any major expendi- tures this year but will con- centrate on the services it pro- vides. ‘The Co-op employs approxi- mutely $0 people in two laca- tions. There are more than 7,000 members in Terrace and the sur- _ rounding area. Three board positions came up for election last week on the nine- member board. New directors selected a presi- dent, first vice president, second vice president and a secretary, The financial news is mirrored by record sales and revenues at the 300 co-ops forming Federated Co-operatives Ltd, For the year ending Oct, 31, 1994, Federated Cooperatives Ltd, reported earnings of $123 million on sates of $1,923 bdillion. Ministry of Forest, a Development Plan prepared by a Professional Forester. The main purpose of the Development Plan is to ensure that proposed harvesting operations address integrated rasource management constraints, aboriginal use, and other public and resource uses. The Development Plan identifies hose cutblocks and roads which the licensee may include in applications during the term of the Plan; it algo indicates proposed road deactivation activilles for the next three yaars. The Plan must be consistent with the Forest Act, the Forest Licanse or the Tree Farm License, and the managament plan in effect for the licence at the time the Develonment Pian is submitted. The credit union is also re- searching a move to allow mem- bers to check their accounts, pay bills and make transfers from their homes by using touch tone phones. “Home-based banking using access cades and PIN numbers will make our system more acces- sible to our members,’’ said Brewer. “Approximately 25 per cent of our phone calls now are questions about cheques clearing and ac- count balances.”’ “Tf we can provide that service through a home-based system, it means our employees can spend more time on financial planning and financial counselling,’’ said Brewer, And that means members will sce the role of credit union em- ployces changing over the next few years in terms of customer e Aim For Safer Driving, Dennis Brewer The credit union holds its an- nual general meeting May 2.
