Clayoquot cut good decision TERRACE — The provincial government’s decision to allow some logging in the Clayoquot was @ good one, says Jack Munro, Speaking at 4 chamber of com- merce’ dinner last week, ihe Forest Alliance chairman said it had two virtues. --Not only did it sent a clear mes- sage B.C. will continue to have a forest industry: and the govern- ment is ready to listen to the pub- lic, Noting the Clayoquot steering commitice had spent three years coming up with its final recom- mendations, Munro said cabinet had made only slight changes to ‘them. However, he was concerned ‘that ‘Victoria had not done more to address the problem of job loss in the forest industry. “They have to pay some atten- tion to the people who are not _now working,”’ he said, ‘As for the complaints from preservationists that any logging ‘was. being allowed, Munro pointed out one of the watershed being protected had an area of 26,000ha, four times the size of _ the Carmanah and all old growth forests. ' As for the logging that is being pemiitied, he pointed out the cut- ting rate was only 1,000ha per year. : Given the total area to be -logged was 90,000ha, that meant ‘a 90 year rotation in an areca _ where new forests would likely : grow’ to harvestable levels quick- er than that. Munro said the devastation of Jack Munroe the forest industry in the north- western United States was a warning to B.C. of what could happen if the pendulum swung too far towards preservation. However, while people had to understand the economic reper- cussions of losing the industry, forest companies. had fo under- Stand the need to deliver on en- vironmental issues, ; Pointing to the 21 point Princi- ples of Sustainable Forestry de- veloped by the Forest Alliance, Munro said ‘It’s the most impor- tant thing we’ve done.’? He also noted 90 per cent of companies operating on the coast and almost as many in the Interior had agreed to abide by those prin- ciples, City land use plan about to be finalized — _ ‘TERRACE — A public hearing scheduled for this coming Mon- day night marks the last lap for “the city’s land use pian. - The plan defines what areas of the city should be used for what purpose (commercial, industrial, residential) as it grows. - new system of permits intended “to ensure future developments fit in with the surrounding neigh- bourhood. _ Northwest Tories to Unless throws up major objections re- quiring a further redrafting of the plan, council will adopt it at its Tuesday, May 25 meeting. Although his role is now very different, those attending last week's chamber dinner soon found his style at the podium is little changed. Below, some examples of vintage Munro: On the early meetings of the Forest Alliance “ As chairman of the IWA for a number of years, you get used to having an executive board that knows the rules, at least Munro’s rulesoforder, ne “To go fram thdt ta a citizen’s board with 31 people who all bring their own egos (and) expertise is a wonderful experience you shouldn’t go through more than once”? Everybody thinks it’s something different. “T hope the bio-diversity understands that we’re protecting it using these new methods of logging because we’re going to be dis- appointed if it doesn’t work.”’ On calls to protect unlogged watersheds “We all heard about the Carmanah when it was the last watershed, now the Clayquot is the last watershed, something else they discovered the other day is now the last watershed, “T don’t know where the hell the second last watershed is, but we know we've got a lot of last watersheds.” the public hearing vs are Norm ° Hanley — LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF BRITISH.COLUMBIA North American Free Trade — Agreement P PUBLIC MEETING The Select Standing Committee on Economic Development, Science, Labour, Training and Technology has been authorized by the Legislative uy, North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) os -. on October?, 1992.
