Gary Reum When council put the contract out for tender, they asked companies to bid on the job and muni- cipal representatives didn’t say the estimate had to in- clude union employ: ees. With taxpayers’ money footing the bill, council had no alternative but to give the work to the lowest bidder. I’d be upset if taxes in- creased in order that a more costiy local company be hired. | agree with councll. ‘ They did the right thing. What Is your reaction? Jim LeClelr Since the contract was let as it was, council had to go with the lowest bid- der. But | wonder lf the contract was let right? Perhaps coun- cll should have Stipulated that the contract be open to companies in the Pacific Northwest region from Hazel- ton to Prince Rupert. Mary McGowan Council, and in turn we local tax- payers, can’t afford to throw $130,000 away. | think It is right that council made the decision they did. It may cause some prob- lems but | believe orcnarEYerecneast should have had an opportunity to nego- tiate so a Jower bid might have been possible. our municipal repre- sentatives acted cor- rectly in trying to make an initial sav- ing of $130,000. lan Gordon | think it's unfair not to give the local contractor prefer- ence in terms of employment for this area. The difference in the price the local company bid, com- pared to the outfit which was awarded the contract, rep- resents a small per- cent of the overall cost when you take into consideration that we taxpayers are footing a total bill of $2.4 million. The $130,000 isn’t the cost of the job, it’s the difference in the bids and it’s almost an irrelevant figure. There are more factors .than the bid price to con- sider when awarding a contract. Art Hoving | think that It’s a shame. CGouncil should have award- ed the contract to a local company. I'd be afraid an out- of-town company would have a tenden- cy to cut corners to meet the jower bid price. District - TERRACE Mayor Jack Talstra indicated recently that up to $200,000 may have to be added to the municipali- ty’s 1986 budget due to deferred expenses from previous years and in- dustrial tax assessment appeals. Talstra caution- ed, however, that not all of the appeals have been ruled on as yet and add- ed the figures could be partially reduced by cost- cutting measures and grants to municipalities from the province.
