We are geting geared up for renovations in che Gallery, which will culminate in a grand opening of our enlarged space and our Christmas show and, hopefully, a book launch, Look for updares on this in the nexe couple of newsletbers. Ac our last board meeting, among other business, we regrettably had to pass a resolution relieving Bill Rennie of his pesition as director. Unfortunately Ball was unable to commit to participating on the board. W's were all looking forward to hearing his unique point of view, There is a Jot of anticipation of “How Do They Do Thar il?" Lf this event is as successful as the first it could become a regular event (How do they do thar, again...). Thanks to all che potters who asteed to demonstrate cheir skills for us. And thanks also to these people who contributed plares for “From the Oven and the Kiln" and participated in the decorating workshops. Phil Rogers will have come and gone by the time you read chis. We would love to hear from someone who took the workshop, with their thoughts on the pots and the workshop for the next newsletter. Our email address is: bepguild@intouch,be-ca Cariboo Patter’s Guild: A busy summer in Williams Lake saw Tam Irving give a week-long workshop on fring che euild's as kiln, which has been somewhat temperamental in the past. The guild has monchly get-tomether with demonstrations and porlucks. Leonard Epp will be giving a workshop in October, demonscrating both hand and wheel techniques. Tozan Society: The Tozan ran a couple of workshops this summer, one with Yasuo Terada a pocter from Seto, Japan. Yasuo digs his own clay and woed-fires. Dannon Rhudy, the fearured potter in the March 98 issue of Ceramics Monthly also gave a workshop, focusing on glazes amd forms char are appropriate for wood-fired kilns. The Ansgama firing had to be canceled due to ongoing concerns by che township regarding emissions. The noborigama kils was flred and the new $5000 afterburner, installed at the insistence of the Envirenmental Ministry, was so efficient at burning off the wood firing residue that it melted the bricks in the chimney, causing it to collapse. Only two of the four chambers reached termperanure, My hat is off to the Tozen Society and its members for theiy courage under fire, Seriously though, what cmuczing dedication. Editor, Arrowsmith Potters Guild: The guild held a pit-firing workshop at Lynsey Gibbons, Many first-timers got a taste of the joys of this firing method. The pit was filled with sawdust, wood chips, chemicals, dog food, Christmas wrappings, grasses, cedar boughs, banana and kiwi skins, etc. Then boards were piled on top of the pots (previously bisqued oo cone OL7) and fire wood was piled chree feet deep, The fire was lit at noon. The following day several beautiful litle pots were tuken from the pit and cleaned and polished. I'd like the brown bands wider so there is not so much gray space in the middle. I'd like owo or chree brown tomes, as im the vase [ left. Pd also really like the speckled look in the plain part so it isn’t so white. The finish is a bit toa shiny —can it be a miacte glaze? Customer's name withheld to protece the Fraser Valley Potters Guild Act the Seprember meeting of the FVPG Cathi Jefferson talked about her co Monrana, where she and Heather Cairns cook part in a two week workshop at the Archie Bray Foundasion. David Lloyd talked about his recent trip to Korea and Japan. The evening's guest was Ayurni Hon, from Washingron state. The guild had a wood-fire workshop organized by Audrey Falkin and Jenny Newman, working from a George Wright kiln design. The kiln was built on Sacurday and tired co come 10 in 7 hours on the Sunday —with good results! The annual roku fundraiser, held at che Campbell Valley Country Celebration was a great success, This year there was a children's clay area coordinated by Heather Northam- Washington Potters Association (OK, nee from BC, but Bellingham is pretty close to the Canadian border) The Whateom Museum of History and Astin Bellingham will hose che exhibit “A Decade of Potters:" from October 30 - February 7. This show is of potters who have worked in their field and made a living atic for ar least 10 years. Each artist shows a place secting and up to 3 functional pieces of their work.
