(Parksville Old Train Station) Pottery Gallery. m_ around the The Gallery was opened co che music of Highland Pipes & Drums. Our Mayor, Julia MacDonald officiated by curting a red nikbon. Other local dignitaries included Councillor Jon Walters, Geoff Corbett of the local rowrism association and members of the Parksville Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Improvement Association. Many members of the Arrowsmith Potters Guild were also there for the festivities and to cheer the opening of their new store. This is anocher big step in the renovation of our local CPR, Station which had lain dormant for several years and is now able ro take on a whole new life as a place for eeople to meet to further cheir artistic journey bur also to give a whole new meaning to travel by train. The passengers now have a warm place co sit down, but also someone to greet them and help where itis needed. The POTS Gallery is open every day from 10am-3pm. Cariboo Potters Guild November newsletter reported chat Debra Broaseuk and Lesley Lloyd atrended the Poeters Guild of BC's fundraising dinner in September, delivering the plates donated by che Cariboo Potters Guild members. The Guild has approached the Community Arts Council about having their insurance cover our kiln, with che Guild paying for additional insurance fees. Debra Brosseuk will represent the Guild ar these meetings. Their Novernber meeting will include a demonstration by Barb Bugg. The Guild Christmas Show and Sale will be held on November 7th in conjunction with the Art Society and the Weaver's Guild. The Guild takes a 20% commission to fund equipment purchases and Guild activities. The Medieval Market is on Novernber 21 & 22. The Guild has reserved 2 booths at this evenc. At the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts Galleria in Burnaby, an exhibit entitled Ceramic 5 opens November 27th and runs until February 7th. The five young, emerging artists are: Sharon Kallis, Sabrina Keskula, Jay MacLennan, Aaron Nelson, and Alison Perey. These artists use pottery ag an investigation of gesture through clay - relationships between volume and fluidiry, shape and colour. The Fraser Vallery Potters Guild newsletter includes a wonderful article by member Harmeny Vissers about che first firing of fellow member Audrey's new wood kiln. Eighteen people (members and spouses) built and subsequently fired 90 pots in seven hours to cone 10- Connie Glover, a member of both che Fraser Valley Potters Guild and the BC Porers Guild, has been chosen te do a major installation of a mural of her design depicting an inner tidal zone (“Slice of Seashore”}. The mural will be 42 feet high and 9 feet wide, soda fired to cone 8, and will be mounted on an exterior elevator shaft, located at one end of a courtyard in a new building in Richmond. There will be a stairwell wrapped around the elevator, so as people ascend or descend, they will see the mural up close. Congratulations Connie! Joan Bruneau, the new instructor at ECLAD, was the guest speaker at their last meeting. Joan showed slides of her work which is primarily earthenware, thrown, altered or assembled, decorated with lots of slips on primarily functional pots with a number of more sculptural pieces included as well. Joan also gave an idea of the pottery scene in Nova Scotia as she currently maincains a studio there. She had a slide of che heritage building chat houses her studioyhome and of her display area. Many thanks Joan for a lock inte your ideas of form, design and their integration in lively and useful pots. And in the November issue of their newsletter, which was just received in the - mail, the Fraser Valley Potters Guild had Rachelle Chinnery as guest speaker ar their last meeting. Rachelle's coil buile/altered pots, fired once to cone 3-5 can be seen at the Gallery of BC Ceramics unul December Ind. Letter to the Membership II I wonder how many potters there really are in BC. If we have roughly 350 members, | bet there are at least 200 unjoined! And Dianne Wilson called for the Fraser Valley Guild. They have $5 members at the end of October, and go up to about 90 members when all che dues are paid - not many of these members are individual members of the Potters Guild of BC (PGBC). The West Coast Clay Sculptors Association has berween 35 - 45 members of whom 9 are PGBC members (1 know cuz I'm the membership chair!}, Juse chink - if a majority of the regional groups’ members joined the PGBC, we would be ar lease 100 stronger.
