A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 10, 2002 xo ROCK DRILLING equipment and blasting |s the order of the day on the section of the Nisga'a Highway as it winds along beside Lava Lake leading into the Nass Valley, More than $50 million wil! have been spent by the time work is fin- ished within the next several years on the improvements. Road work continues on Nisga’a Highway CONSTRUCTION CREWS are well on their way to finishing one of the more complicated legs of the multi-million dollar project to improve the highway into and in the Nass Valley. ~ Rock drilling and blast- ing to widen the stretch of the Nisga’a Highway as it winds along Lava Lake is proceeding on schedule, says transportation mini- stry official George Lomas. “There are tons of rock to be moved,” said Lomas of the project which in- valves blasting inte rock and then using it as fill along the lakeshore io widen the road. “In all, 221,000 cubic metres of material will be moved,” he said. The infilling is taking place gradually. to allow the material to settle in the lake before the next layer is deposited. That settling will do away with the chances of the material moving after paving is complete,. said Lomas. Project ‘specifications call for the section to be -completed and paved: by September 2003. The Lava Lake section will be 8.2 metres wide, the same width as other portions of the Nisga’a Highway improvement project, Lomas added. The construction has meant complete closures overnight and minor delays during the day. The Lava Lake section is but ane of a series of improvements to cost more than $50 million by the Two sent to prison ONE FORMER Terrace resident and an Albertan man were jailed July 2 after pleading guilty to various counts of thefts from vehicles, Nicholas House, 21, a former resident of Terrace- who now lives in Alberta, and. Thomas Foss, 22, pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 and three counts of theft under $5,000, ¢ Police said they ar- rested House and Foss after they received com- plaints from residents near Clark St. in Thornhill of thefts from vehicles. The suspects were driv- ing a Honda CRY, which was located in the 3400 block of Clark St., police said. The vehicle had been stolen from Medicine Hat, Alberta on June 24, police added. Both men were located near the vehicle which contained stolen goods ‘from vehicles in the area. Foss was sentenced to 21 days in jail for each of the four counts to be served concurrently. House was sentenced to three months in jail for the theft over $5,000 charge and 10 days for each count of theft under $5,000 also _ to be served concurrently. a : time everything is done in 2006. Already a section of the highway leading to the Lava Lake stretch has been completed and paved. In the valley itself, two sections are being worked on toward Green- ville and another section of the road to that Nisga’a village is to be raised. That'll do away with fleoding from the Nass River during high water years, said Lomas. Part of that work will involve measures to safe- guard fish populations and a new bridge, he added, The transportation mini- stry will be grouping some af the paving projects to- pether in one contract. “We hope to encourage bidding by several compa- nies,” explained Lomas. When finished, every kilometre of road leading into the Nass Valley and the"séctions to Greenville and New Aiyansh will be paved. Also on the lst is a 10km paving project from New Aiyansh east to Nass Camp. As well, the sections of sealcoating already in place through the lava beds themselves north of Lava Lake will be re- placed by pavement. While those sections are in good shape, says local transportation official Don Ramsay, laying down asphalt follows on a com- mitment made when the highway improvement pro- ject was first announced. That has increased the cost of the overall project but it will be absorbed within the transportation ministry’s budget, he said. “In fact there are some vertical and horizontal [road] alignment issues we'll be addressing as well,” said Ramsay. That work will make the road all the more safer, he added. The Nisga’a Highway _improvement project will reduce significantly the travel time north of Ter- race to the Nass Valley. It?s also expected to spur economic develop- ment such as tourism. TANDARD 3210 Clinton Street, Terrace, B.C.
