A crane from Rain Coast Cranes and Equipment began hoisting sections of ihe roof Into place. That work is expected to continue this week. Dueck Construction of Nanaimo is the general contractor on the $2.8 million project. The trusses were being assem- bled on the ground first by local contractor Snowvalley Builders Inc. to creating a bigger open market for logs. Log auctions, done with enough timber, would help determine a market value ’ for wood that could help set stumpage rates. and address Americda claims’ *" the B.C. industry is unfair- ly subsidized. But if West Fraser found it could make more money selling logs to the open market than by run- ning its Terrace sawmill, Malhotra said, then local workers should brace for layoffs. The North Coast Timber sawmill in Prince Rupert was closed by West Fraser this fall and is an example of what can happen, he said. West Fraser had to operate its Rupert sawmill in order to keep its North Coast forest licence. But the NDP govern- ment severed the licence from the mill and let West Fraser sell the licence to a logging company. Assurances were made at licence transfer hearings that the mill could conti- nue to use the limber and that mill jobs would be protected. But barely a year later, Malhotra noted, West Fra- ser has permanently closed the Rupert sawmill. The same fate could await many other B.C. sawmills if the regulatory change proceeds, he said. “Our union is going to be fighting this,” Malhotra said. “But the Liberals have the majority. They will do what they want.” Skeena MLA Roger Harris said the issue is a serious one. “We don’t want at the end of the day to have just sawmills in Nanaimo, Prince George and Van- couver and nowhere else,” he said. . But Harris said the idea is still evolving and pre- dicted there will be much more debate before a final policy is decided. Skeena Cellulose also has a number of licences with appurtenancy clauses, say ministry officials. The Orenda forest 1i- ‘cence and Nass timber .Suply area are tied ta operation of the pulp mill, - Kispiox and Kitwanga area forest licences are. linked to the. Carnaby and Kitwanga sawmills.
