NEW IN TOWN: Canadian driver/supervisor Lyle Miner shows. off one of: the Waste Services firm's trucks. The company is setting up here ta com pete far the local garbage hauling business. Waste haulers set up shop Big boys go after garbage business THE COUNTRY’S: largest ‘waste hauling and disposal company has moved into Terrace. Canadian Waste Services Inc. is signing up businesses and will hire several local people and - possibly more as demand warrants, says “ils northem operations manager, Rolf Thomsen, Tt may extend itself south of Kitimat and west to Prince Rupert but ‘first wants lo establish a base here, he said last week, While it picks up residential wasle under contract: to muiticipalities, in other parts of the proviice, ‘the com- pany for now is confining itself to businesses here, said Thomsen. . “Anything like that j is up to the cily to decide,”’ he said. Terrace several years ago paye up on commercial and: -business waste colicction to the “private sector but retains city crews to pick up residen- tial garbage. A plhin last year to extend ‘private collection to residences was abandon- ed at the last minute, Canadian Waste also owns and op- cratcs landfill siles in other provitices, but. Thomsen. says B.C. is one of the lew remaining jurisdictions “where governments continue to own and op- eraie landfill sites. Until: moving into Terrace to’ com- pete” with Riverside. Disposal, -the farthest: west “the company had a presence was in Burns’ Lake: where ‘it , bought out an existing company. . ‘Tt maintains’ a substantial operation in Prince George, The. one “new: waste service il will, provide, beginning. this fall, is -recy- cling of any fibre. product such. as white paper, newsprint and cardboard. Although there have been several al- tempts in the past decade'to éstablish a recycling: service here, Thomsen says Canadian” Waste’s experience and size will make it-viable. °° “We're ina good position to offer a service customers here haven't had,” “he said, The goal, Thomsen added, least: break éven ‘on the recycling of fibre over the next several years. - AN advantage. of recycling as much {fibre .a8” possible -i8 the reduction on the amount’of overall waste going into landfill sites, he said, That's working’ in Prince George is to al” where Canadian Waste is shipping away between 900 and 1,100 metric tonnes of fibre a year for recycling in- stead of having it buried as garbage, Thomsen continued. “Our long term goal here is defer 10 to 20 metric tonnes a month,”’ he said. Customers who do sign up to have their waste fibre recycled will be a fee over and above the regular waste pickup charge, “But Thomsen said that combined cost will be at least the same and probably less than what cuslomers would pay to have all of their garbage hauled away to the dump. That’s because customers wha do choose to recycle won't need as large a container for their regular waste and nay need fewer pickups, said Thom- sen. The company is also considering pulling up several bins around town so tourists and residenis can drop off fibre. Canadian Waste in Prince George hires a broker to ship fibre from there down south for recycling, And -while there is a market for fibre, recycling of glass or other pro- ducts isn’t economically viable, said Thomsen. # Child's Age F Session # Medical # : & Family Doctor BE ASTAR! g g Please malt reglatration and cheque (payable to Terrace Lita Theatra) lo: 4 " Terrace Littie Theatre -.3625 Kalum Streat, Terrace, B.C, V8G 2P4 g For further Information, leave your name and phone mimber on the McCail Playhouse answering machina (638-1215) and someone will retum your call.
