AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 21, 1995 Still in the dum * Dear Sir: Over the period of the last two months I have been questioning the Kitimat-Stikine regional dis- trict on how it based its decision on salvaging (recycling) from the Thornhill Landfill Site. I was informed that we were a risk and because of the high cost of insurance liability that we would only be able to recycle in four certain areas after signing a waiver, I would like quote from their bylaw #367 Schedule B, ‘Risk: while the Regional District has developed site —r regulations designed to provide for public safety, any person enteting we disposal sited does so at his or her own risk and are requested to ex- ercise caution for their own pcr- sonal safety, The operation of a landfill involves risks and hazards and the regional district does not accept responsibility or liability for damage or injury to any per- son using the disposal site or to property,”" This clearly states that the Dis- trict already doesn’t accept any responsibility or liability. So “anyone” using the dump is doing so at their own risk. Because the district doesn’t ac- cept any responsibility or liability I think a sign should be posted which would totally release them of responsibility or liability, and allow us people who know how ps The Mail Bag to use Our common sense to de- cide whether we want to take that risk or not. “Recycle at your own tisk”? sign. I have actively been recycling from the Thomhilt Landfill Site for the last 3 years and have seen first hand the dangers and risks a person takes, It’s mot as dangerous as some would have you believe. The same common sens¢ that gets a person there safely is the same common sense they use while recycling, The foresight that one uses to make sure they don’t get in an ac- cident in a parking lot also makes them watch out for large com- mercial vehicles dumping their loads, We also watch how we handle potential health risks given household waste. “They can catch things out there,’’ should be my choice if that risk ever hap- pens, For I’m willing to accept that responsibility if it were ever to occur, Is the dump a park site or a dump site? For slashed bags al- low the garbage inside to decompose more rapidly (by years) which is better for the en- vironment. el @ rata. With two dumpe in the Terrace area I feel they should classify the Thombill Landfill as an ‘‘all sec- tion recycling disposal site,” I've heard that the landfill site might last for about 60 years, so ona busy day if 15 vehicles came in and we could recycle four truck loads, would not this help to add a few more usable years to the landfill site, By not including the active face as a recycling section they have greatly limited what can be recycled, We could furnish and clothe many needy people. To make things worse to recy- cle from the active face could be deemed as an offense and is li- able, on summary conviction to a fine of not less than $200 for a first offence. This is recycling in the 90s. I’ve also heard the Terrace dump and Prince Rupert dump also don’t allow any recycling. Why do we have to follow those footsteps? Let’s create a new example that teaches us to recycles. Then one day they may change their direc- tion and follow our path to reduce, reuse, recycle. ‘Mari-Lenne Pierce, Terrace, B.C, ah iz wah [i fi chal al UNBELIEVABLY PRICE Limit 2 Per Custo ee a es a a te lt tel ch ed me eet we FRIDAY, JUN, a Rete ea eee foe PRU RARE _ DON Hurry In And Check Our Ever Changing Assortment Of Great Merchandise At The LOWEST PRICES IN TOWN 4647 Lakelse Ave. Terrace, B.C.
