By V.. VICTOR, WESTWOOD HO: Around Na- naimo Westwood is a name diffi- cult to forget. The former cabinet minister, replaced by popular consent of the voters who pre- ferred a member of the New Dem- ocratic Party to represent them in Victoria, is a hard man to forget, mostly due to the things and places named after him; there is Westwood Lake, Park, Road, Farms, Chapel of Flowers, and now the ferry to Gabriola Island is the M.S. Westwood. However the boy Waccie has sent him to London on a trade mission or something, which only goes to prove, if the voters won’t have you, the Socreds will. This is the same type of posi- tiog as our B.C. tourist Bureau in San Francisco, California, now operated by a former Cabinet Minister who, by some odd quirk of fate, began to become rather odoriferous (politically speaking, ‘that is). Not that Mr. Westwood has any ‘taint’ other than having. been a SOCRED, and to fifty- five percent of the voters, that seems to be enough “taint”. * of * : WORK FOR WELFARE, MOORE; Of Courtenay, formerly the mayor, has taken the job of ‘Town Clerk, This is one way of ensuring your own employment when the voters are about to re- ject your offer at the civic polls. It almost seems like a page from the Bennett Book is being fol- lowed, One suggested position for this Moore fellow would be laison officer between American Nu- clear Arms Guards and Courten- ayites, if and when the ARMS arrive. Work on the Runway is pro- gressing according to schedule. ‘Formerly the runway was too short to accomodate American nuelear carrying bombers, which is the only way these arms could arrive at this airdrome. But they won’t, the Americans have prov- { ! Gen. “Bill 22 was instituted so no one else would be able to exploit the blind, the C.N.1I.B. alone has that privilege” — Socred politician unknown. “We cannot, and will not allow anyone to defame our ministers, we have our own cap- abilities” — Also stated by an unknown Socred, sounds like Waccie. These and many other classics have originated on the Island, but it is not a reflection of the thinking of the voters of Canada’s Socialist centre where the first Socialist member of the Federal Parliament was elected by Na- naimo people more than thirty- five years ago. * * * THE UNITED WAY: The United Appeal is well on the way with many volunteers in the field col- lecting from the door for the rich, Anyone under the impression that twenty-five thousand dollars, ~ (that’s the salary of the Director of United Appeal of B.C.), doesn’t make one rich should try to spend that much in any year without squandering it. The N.P.A. council which has been mismanaging the city for 27 years, proposes that Vancouver stand still — in the middle of an economic boom of unpreced- ented scope, Stewart charged. He proposed a Five Year Plan which would clear the city of much of its blight, expand and modernize the port, build thous- ands of low rental homes and greatly increase badly needed public facilities. “Where will the money come from?” Stewart asked. “I suggest that the city council draw up a program based onthe needs of the city as outlined above.
