Housewife, grower LPP choice in Delta One Socred promise in the 1953 election was that it would wipe out multiple-seat ridings. Instead the reverse has happened; more have been created. One of these is Delta, which will elect two representatives on September 19. Labor- ie agra Gaspar, large-scale strawberry and S ecatie grower, and Myrtle (‘‘Walli’) Burnell, a Fraser Valley housewife. Mrs. Burnell was born in Ottawa in 1922, received her education at Glebe Collegiate and Ottawa Normal School and became a teacher. Then the war came along and she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women’s Division) in 1942, held the rank of ser- geant when demobbed in 1945. BA degree at Queen’s University, Kingston, in 1946, moved to B.C. that same year and married George Eric Burnell, a fisherman. They have two girls and a boy. Gaspar has lived in B.C. since 1930. He was a hat man- ufacturer for 10 years before turning te farming. A mem- ber of Farmers Union of B.C., he is well known in the Fraser Valley as the first man to in- troduce broccoli and brussels sprouts in the area. Gaspar, who grows more than a million strawberry plants each year, is harshly critical of Socred farm poli- cies. “Dairymen,” he says, “are , about to go under because of rising production costs, but Agriculture Minister Kiernan has stated he will do nothing to help them.” TED HARRIS Painters’ and Paperhangers’ Supplies Sunworthy Wallpaper Reg. 45c, Now 19¢ a roll 757 E. Their years of hard work, applied to a country so richly endowed by nature, is a precious heritage which we must jealously guard for our children and our children’s children. “Envious eyes are turned upon our rich and beautiful land. U.S. and Canadian fi- nancial circles are literally gobbling up huge tracts of our forest lands, our richest mines and our water resourc- es. Premier Bennett and his NICK KLIM North Okanagan government aid and abet this seizure.” Klim said that the LPP stands for adequate assistance to farmers to overcome heavy frost damage, droughts and floods; improvement of mar- eting facilities and an end to American dumping; a fulltime Labor Relations ‘Board which will include elected labor re- presentatives; a new deal in municipal financial assistance and repeal of- the sales tax; government forest manage- ment and an end to Forest Management Licenses, with adequate protection for small operators; public 0”, and development of #F hydroelecttic and nes facilities through ~ Power Commission.
