rage B2 — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 4, 1992 \ Around town J Time to tap asset Have you thought of hiring a handicapped person? That’s a question being posed by the local branch of the B.C, Paraplegic Association (BCPA). ‘(Handicapped people are an untapped resource in any community,’’ says regional rehabilitation consultant JoAnn Mermans, adding they can be a great asset to the workforce if given the opportunity. Mermans said the purpose of the BCPA is to identify any special needs, physical or medical, the handicapped may face and then to address those needs. One need which has its continuing attention is that of ac- cess. In an effort to continue increasing the number of places that are accessible, she said members of the local BCPA ad-_ visory committee were willing to meet with anyone — mer- chants or company representatives, community groups and societies _ interested i in making their place of business open to Where a business or organization takes the steps te become fully accessible, Mermans said the BCPSA would ensure the public was made aware of the change. The advisory committee is made up of both ablebodied and handicapped people. At the moment they are all from the Terrace area but Mermans said plans called for the addition of new members from Kitimat and Prince Rupert. Chaired by Heather Eyjolfson, the committee also includes Terry McKay (secretary), Marie Hildebrandt, Lynn McKen- zie, Marge Skead, Ray Johnston, Susan Goodmanson, Dave Hull, Wilf Geir, Tammy Toriglia, Felix Goyette, Shiela Han- son and Linda Otango.
