Tory tour bolsters candidate F as federal election looms THE CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada has targeted the Skeena Bulkley riding as one they want to win back in the next federal election. It was won in the June 2004 federal election by NDPer Nathan .Cullen after being held by the Conservatives and its predecessors through three elections beginning in 1993. Two Conservative MPs, who visited the region two weeks ago, said the party will . commit the resources needed to reclaim the seat. “We: have a good candi- date and‘a good team,” said Jay Hill, the MP for Prince George - Peace River who was here with Niagara Falls MP Rob Nicholson. , He said candidate Mike Scott, who was the Reform and then Canadian Alliance MP from 1993 until retiring - just before the 2000 elec- tion, has the experience and knowledge needed. ’ Hill and Nicholson visited other ridings in the province ‘on their target list, saying the party is gearing up for an ‘election that should come by the end of the year. . Trying to prevent Martin: from staging the defeat of his government to force an election may seem odd, said Nicholson in adding that there is continous political intrigue going on in Ottawa. “But it’s not really up, to us. It is up to the NDP. . They’re pretty tight with ‘the Liberals and now they also: have the support of the Bloc Quebecois,” he said. Both MPs said a prospec- tive federal surplus this year approaching $9.5 billion is. more than enough proof that | Canadians are over-taxed, . They’re also critical of the federal Liberal attitude toward the soft wood lumber dispute with the United States, saying that insulting Americans and their leaders isn’t the answer. “That won’t- help nego- tiations at all. Prime Minister Martin keeps saying he’s go- ing to call [Bush]. Well for heaven’s sake. Why doesn’t | he do it,” said Nicholson. But neither Hill nor Nich- olson were unsure of what to - do should attempts to negoti- ated a settlement fail. And neither favoured im- posing tariffs on American .- ’ products, saying that.would | only risk the free trade agre-. ment Canada does have with the United States. Candidate Scott favours an education program aimed at American. consumers in- forming them of the cost of the current tariff. “The extra..cost for an American house is something like $1,000 because of the. tariff. That’s something they © need to know,” said Scott. LESA DEVINE Que ality | People = @ uali Quality Se - Lesa Devine has worked for TRDCU J for iB years FF and is the branch receptionist.
