Throughout his teaching career, - Hugh Power was. involved: in teaching typing, shorthand, - accounting and office practises. In his third year of teaching, © Hugh taught in Addis Ababa, _ Ethiopia for three years. He saw _ this as an opportunity to experi- _enece life in another country, to ~ travel and see the world. He recalls teaching in a boarding school as, "...diffi cult for the ". students. “They had. to study ~ English, French and their text- ~ pooks: were Anierican.” - “The students took 12 courses | per term and had to write British OP: Ievel government exams. - When ‘Hugh. arrived. the. school - had an ‘Egyptian principal, who had * been ~ replaced by an 2 -Eamleotee by the time he left. Hugh’ himself lived in a hotel tof’ an apartment complex an ate. in: the ‘adjoining restaur- " graduation. . from | the: Adult Education for School ‘District #88. He ran it. almost single-handed and organized the. first class for the GED (grade 12 equivalency) exams. Some of the ‘teachers he recruited to teach GED and English as a second language (ESL) are still in Ter- ‘race today. One of the highlights of Hugh’s time in Terrace was his ‘involvement with the Terrace ‘Kinsmen and their many com- | munity projects including the arena, swimming pool and Kid- fais _dies Kamp at Lakelse Lake. He was president for a year and was awarded a life membership: when ~ he left Kinsmen. Hugh admits quietly that he ‘could take credit for getting K- 40 (a ‘club for former Kinsmen | over the age of 40) started in ‘Terrace. He says they had talked about it for years, but during his year .as- president, he really — -Hught Power married Olga Croot, anew home economics teacher pushed for it. Hugh explains, "The K-40s clubs are few and | ‘far between, but they provide a nice venue for continuing friend- ships established in Kinsmen." The. K-40s meet once monthly for a social gathering. A few years ago, they organized a major Kinsmen reunion, their biggest effort yet When asked if Hugh ‘and his wife Olga would ‘be leaving x Terrace, Hugh says, "We haven't :thought about it yet. I’ve been here. 30 years: and really. enjoyed it” Hugh. ‘has just retumed from .a one-week trip to Arizona. Next ‘month, he is going on a seniors’ Bus and Sea tour, travelling through the southern States to - Florida, followed by a seven-day cruise:-to Mexico, Upon his return, Hugh Power plans to get . involved with the Happy Gang Centre. He concludes, "I'd like | to continue organizing things, ‘™ but let ‘someone else do the Hugh Power: I've been here 30 years and really enjoyed it.
