' Tomas, WORD OF MOUTH presented by College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. THE FIRST DENTAL VISIT Your child’s first visit to the dentist should be at 2 1/2 to 3 years of age when ail, or most, of his teeth have erupted, It Is in this Important introductory appointment that your child will establish the beginnings of what we hops ls alasting relationship as he meets his “partners In dental health” for the first time. And when he first steps foot into that dental offica, any preconceived notions he has of what to expect willbe mostly As a parent, it is your own thoughts and actions that will be most instrumental in molding yourchild's perceptions and attitudes. Youhave the opportunity to instill him with a tong-lasting positiva attitude towards dental care or make him forever apprehensive about seeing a dentist. What impression are you giving? Subtle phrases like “it won't hurt much” and “Oh, no, | have got to go to the dantist today” are not lost on Anatural fear of the unknown Is cause for children to experiance some uneasiness about their first dental appointment. One way to help your child overcome this concern Is by having him accompany you to one of your own dental appointments - as long as you aren't too anxious about However, given that overpreparing an anxious person only serves to fuel thelr anxiety, be as matter-of-fact In fact, dentists have found that many of their younger patients enijay coming into their offices because they enjoy both the break from the normal routine and the attention they recelve fromthe dental staff. More and more children are cavity-free, and the preventive treatment that Is required can be administered without discomfort. Unfortunately, there are still occasions when first dental visits are delayed until serious dental problams have developed. At that point extensive treatment may be required that could thereafter have the little patient equate trauma with visits to the dental office. The number of children requiring extensive treatment is decreasing through education and awareness; however, future generations will only continue to benefit from good dental health if regular checkups and preventive care This column is written by B.C. dentist Dr. Willlam McNiece. information within je not Intended to diagnose or plan treatment; readers should consult their dentist for individuel dental care..
