Half- Marathon won by Ansems It took veteran runner Ed Ansems five years before he ad- ded his name to the All Seasons Half-Marathon trophy for a se- cond time. Ansems' won the _ initial 13.1-mile event in 1983, In doing so he set a record time of one hour, 11 minutes and 23 seconds ’ that was never broken over the years, . In winning his second race in the sixth annual event on Oct. 25, Ansems clocked a time of one hour, 17 minutes and eight seconds, almost six minutes slower than the record. “The reason mainly is that when we first mapped out the route around Terrace, we miscalculated on proper distance,’’ seems we were short on the ac- tual mileage. Now the race is truly 13.1 miles.”’ When the race was set up in the summer, it was hoped that two-time winner Charles Nelson might return to try for a third trophy. However, Nelson now attends university and couldn’t make it. The Nelson family of Prince Rupert was represented by Charles’ father, Dr. John Nelson, and Charles’ younger brother Joe. Joe placed third overall, about behind Ansems, Second place went to South African exchange student Brett Wearne of Smithers. He was less than two minutes behind Ansems said. “It. ‘five minutes” Ansems and first for junior men. - The fourth-place finisher was Neil Fleischmann and his time of 1:22.47 gave him first place in the masters over-40 category. Ray Leonard of Prince Rupert was fifth across the line, with Dr. Nelson coming in sixth, Merve Crawford came in seventh. Only three women were in- cluded in the disappointing 22 person entry list, The youngest in junior women’s category dropped out early due to an injury. Lori Paolinelli and Janis Ger- man of Prince Rupert ran the TACe together and crossed the line in an identical time of 1:58.37. World record holder in wheelchair racing — Paul Clark. of Terrace — also tackled the course and came home in one hour, one minute and 49 seconds. -Clark said it was his best time ever for this: tace,...about 10 minutes faster than his previous best. Among the runners were three grade nine boys from Skeena Junior High School, Chad and “David Edmonds with David Shepherd ran the race in relay style last year, with Gary Peden’ — ' as a fourth runner. The trio tried it again this year without Peden’s services, and were about two minutes behind the 1:22.00 they did in ’86. The action was speedy at senior high schoo! girls volleyball action in Terrace on October 24, Caledonia Kermodes won the four-team series without‘a loss. a Scores are...
