hoy To the editor Why capitalize on Lord’s Day with walkathon? Editor, At first sight, it was good to see the big advertisement furthering the worthy cause of The Terrace Ice Arena, But then came the let-down. It was to be on Sunday morning. How is it possible that with 14 churches here in Ter~ race, such @ time is chosen without any explanation or apol- ogy? Where is the common courtesy of our well-intentioned civic leaders which will respect this day as possibly eome- thing special for the majorlty—or at least a minority of the people here? Instead, it is “open for all the familyl”’ Many chureh-goers and Sunday schoolers might have wished to join in raising money In this way for the ice arena, Some, however, still think God ought to come first and our own fun second. The Ice Arena people are really “skating an pretty thin ice” if they have to capitalize on the Lord’s day to acquire the needed capital. Why not have the Walk-a-thon on a Wednesday afternoon- with all stores clogedand schools recessed? “Why, we couldn't do that! We would lose money!'? How selfish can we get? Is it right to rob God of one day in seven when we have six others to choose from? ' Perhaps ministers and church people themselves are to’ blame, Perhaps we do not think enough of the Lord's day. Why don’t we have the intestinal fortitude to speak up and let others know our feelings. [Ef we don’t stand for something, we'll very likely fall for anything. Now we shouldn't only pick on the Arena Assgoclation, I understand the elementary schools held a track meet last Sunday. At least they had an explanation - if no apology: “So the parents may attend.” those responsible that it might he discriminating against those children now allowed to attend? It is debatable whether our public schools should be "neutral*’ jn education. It should not be a matter of debate whether they have the right to rob the church and God of His day, If It must be neutral, let not the school go further by grinding the gears and throwing every« thing into reverse, The publie school is “on the wrong track" when it sponsors track meets on Sunday, If that's the only dime parents can.come, there’s something wrong with the par- ents, . ‘ Once every week, the whole family should comeaway from the rush and rest awhile. The family needs time out, to get back in tune - to perform harmoniously for another week. They need this time to get tolhinow each other, to understand and face the world, to get to know God through Jesus Christ who said “Man shall not live by bread alone, butby every word that pro- ceeds from the mouth of God,'' (By the way, now that we've had a Walk-a-thon, how about a Work-a-thon — a city-wide, citizen-wide clean-up? It would be much more valuable to the sponsor, the spotiored - and to the despondent), 8 . Vernon Luchies Christian Reformed Church Did it never enter the minds of et "1 =r ‘ Pe th.
