When International Children’s Day is celebrated around the world Sunday, June 1 millions of parents will fight for a brighter and happier future for their children as they take part in rallies and demonstrations for ‘peace. Vancouver's celebration wil] .take the form of a sports and concert event at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. MAY DAY is a great day for Katy and John, for they love to march in the parade and sing off key at the top of their voices. One of their favorite songs is Hold the Fort, and when the parade was over this year young John asked what it meant. Well I had to admit I didn’t know where the saying originated, but when we got home I made a bee- line for good old Bartlett's Quo- tations, my friend in need. We found that it was William Te- cumseh Sherman who, in 1864, signalled to General Corse in Allstoona ‘Hold the fort! I am coming-”’ ‘ ‘This was all very interesting, but what caught my eye were three other quotations attributed “to this famous-general which, if he were alive today would have ‘the Un-American Activities Com- mittee seeing its favorite color. In the same year he was telling General Corse to hold the fort, he also stated, “War is cruel and | you cannot refine it” and, “‘War at best is barbarism.” Later, in an address before the graduating ‘class of Michigan ‘Military Academy, he told these young men trained for battle “I am tired and sick of war, Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wound- ed who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desola- tion, War Is hell.¢ Can you im- agine General MacArthur giving: such a pep talk to the graduat- ing class of West Point! * ok * MY SCORE for the last col- umn I wrote was one hit, one error (if that’s possible). I had got quite hot and bothered about the Japanese ‘‘peace’”’ treaty and predicted that the Japanese people would protest. I can assure you I got quite a sur- prise to see the noon papers the next day headlining the Japan- ese May Day demonstrations, My error was in recommend- ing a book How a Baby is Born for children to read. I had only briefly sampled it on my way to .work and being short on ideas had figured a short review would do the trick. Later, when I’read it through properly I had to . change my opinions of it. Actu- ally, the book is much too de- tailed- for youngsters and could. cause a great deal of confusion in a young child’s mind.
