CORPORATION OF THE C1TY OF PORT COQUITLAM PARKS A'ECREATION COMMITTEE A meeting of the Parks & Recreation Committee was held in the Parks dt Recreation Office on November 9, 1992 at 5:00pm. In attendance were Councillor Mike Thompson and Councillor Michael Wright. Also in attendance was Janna Taylor, Parks dt Recreation Director, Larry J. Wheeler, Recreation Manager/Deputy Director. Item No. 1 The Recreation Manager/Deputy Director re"iewed the plans for the office space at the PoCo Rec Centre. The plans have been approved by both the Building and Fire Departments. Monies have already been approved in the Capital Budget, Recommendation: To approve the plans and to proceed with construction. ~Cri d Item No. 2 1993 Padres and Recreatiion Capital Budget The Committee finished reviewing the proposed 1993 Capital Budget. To ItACKGROUND The Parks and Recreation Director requested a report be prepared which outlines the programs, support services, etc. provided by the department for Youth and other services in the Port Coquitlam area that deals with issues, provides support, etc. for the youths. PARKS AND RECREATION ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES ACTIVITIES/PROGRANS: J.A.S. Wednesdays 6:00-9;00pm 11-14yrs Drop-in Program Location: Hyde Creek (upstairs) 92.00 or g1.00 with a Tean Card. variety of activities are made available for the youth: movies, Nintendo, board games, music, peer interaction, etc. Weather permitting, outside activities are also A included, Friday Night Party Nachine 7:00-10:00pm 11-13yrs & 14-18 yrs Drop-in Program Location: Hyde Creek (upstairs & gym) $ 2.00 or 91.00 with a Teen Card. Similar activities as Wednesday evenings. The gym time, 4:00-5:30pm 12-17yrs available on these evenings, allows us to include more physical activities than on Wednesday nights. Clowning Program Registered Program Tuesdays Location: Hyde Creek Teens are given the opportunity to learn the art of clowning. Dress, face painting, balloon caricatures, how to run a birthday party are some of the skills taught in this program. This program is an introduction/prerequisite to the Clowning Club. NOV 09 SR Clowning Club Location: Wednesdays 4:30-5:30pm Hyde Creek 12-17yrs Teens who have completed the Clowning Program are invited to join the Clowning Club. The Club enhances the skills learned in the Clowning Program. It provides interaction amongst the "clowns" and, with the support of the Youth Leaders, it acts as an avenue for part-time clowning jobs. Camping Trips 12-17yrs All Seasons Overnight trips include experiences in skiing, camping etc. Day Trips 11-15yrs All Seasons Generally Saturdays We run successful day trips to Nuseums, Horseback Riding, Novice and Dinner, Science World, Waterslides, etc. Teen Dances 11-13yrs All Seasons Average attendance is 120 teens. Very successful. The older ages, (14-lgyrs) dances will begin again in the near future which will be run by the Teen Committee in conjunction with Parents and staff. On The Move 12-17yrs Nondays 5:30 — 7:30pm Girls only This is a very successful program. In the Fall of 1992 thirty registered. This program is designed for girls to participate in sport without the pre"sures of "having to be the best". It is a time for the girls to socialize and have fun. Mote: The Youth Stafr are spending the Fall season researching feasibility of adding a Friday night drop-in program at PoCo Rec the Centre. If we feel there is a need and we can offer a quality program we will start this program in January 1993. RESOURCES/SUPPORT SERVICES Teen Cosssittee Nondays 14-lgyrs & Fridays 11-13yrs For 1992/93 we have 28 Teen Committee Members in the 14 to 18 ages and 15 Teen Committee Nembers in the 11 to 13 ages. These people act in an advisory capacity to the Department through the Youth Coordinator and Leaders. In addition to directing our formats for programs snd activities for this age group; they are also very active in fund raising, volunteering, and planning/executing events. Recreation Experience 14 years and older Through the Parks and Recreation department volunteer opportunities such as Leisure Buddies, helping with Special Events or. participating in the Leadership youths are given the advantage of experiencing theProgram, recreation profession. Leadership We run three very successful Leadership programs: Preleadership 11-13yrs Thursdays 4:00-5:30pm Leadership //1 14-18yrs Thursdays 7:00-10:00pm Leadership f/2 14-lgyrs Sundays 1:00-4:00pm The Youth Leaders work with the teens to develop skills the attitude to become good leaders and workers as they and begin their work careers. They work on specific skills geared towards recreation leaders. Newsletter Beginning this Winter Season, the Teen Committee has designed a Newsletter for Teens in Port Coquitlam. There will be updates on activities, articles, puzzles and much more. Bulletin Board its'wn At Hyde Creek the Teen area has Bulletin Board with information pertinent to the "teen age". Teen Cards 11-13yrs and 14-18yrs 86.00 for one year This card offers discounts on oll our programs. card holders will receive the news.'tters and updates The through the ma.i. 1 SERVICES PROVIDED BY 0'rHER AGENCIES IN THE AREA: Recornect Program Pager 645-7096 Reconnect is funded by the B.C. Government, but is not part of the Police, Courts, or Probation. These people are street workers. They work with youth who have problems with parents, alcohol/drugs, school, law, welfare etc. work to help them find obs and job training. They are They there for teens wbo just need someone to talk to or want help getting off of the street. Share Outreach Phone 931-1178 of programs are available through Share for Teens or Parents and Teens. Their programs deal more with social issues, rather than teen oriented programs and activiti.es. A number Mental Health Phone 941-8633 Mental Health offers free counselling services to teens in trouble, suicidal or needing to talk. They are extremely busy and appointments must be made. Greater Coquitlam Volunteer Centre Through the B.C. Youth Grant the Teen Issues Committee and G.C.V.C. funding was made available fcr a District 43 newspaper, "The Edge". It is produced entirely by Teens. Socias Development Council District 43 Teen Issues Committee This committee consists mostly of adults. They meet once e month.
