A L F P E R F O R M A N C E October 22, 2003 To Daisie Feu de Joie (Joy of Life) is a new live site-specific durational performance work by renowned Canadian interdisciplinary artists Randy & Berenicci. The presentation references historic scientific discoveries and optical inventions that led to the development of the moving picture. Through a simple live demonstration, the artists will present a recreation of archaic technologies exploring the principles of assisted directed vision. The artists will perform the simple action of walking endlessly forward, locked forever in place. Seen from afar, through a telescopic viewer, the performers appear as if in miniature, on the stage of an actual puppet theatre placed between them and the tableau. The performers image will be lit by halogens through a generator or xtension cord from Plaza of Nations/Casino building. The fire site includes a sculpture lit by a small propane tank by which the audience will be seperated from. The audience will be viewing the performance through a telescope that gives the optical illusion that the performers are walking through the fire. This artwork explores optics. The piece requires a location that offers an open nautical channel between the audience and the performers and a vista integrating modern industry and nature behind them. The audience watches the performers across the water. The piece is designed for viewing from one specific location on the proscenium. The only personnel allowed access to the performance site across the inlet will be the artists themselves and their staging technician. The LIVE Performance Art Biannual is producing the artwork in conjunction with Grunt Gallery through the assistance of The Canada Council, Heritage Canada and the Innations program of ECIAD. The production involves the collaboration of Vancouver's top curators and technicians. We sincerely look forward to the support of Science World to allow us access to the waterfront for this most stimulating cultural event. Enclosed is material related to the performance we will be in touch about other concerns you might have.
