‘TERRACE STANDARD Busingss REVIEW Leclerc takes helm at 16/37 By JOANNA WONG IT'S OFFICIAL, The torch has been pas- sed to Roger Leclerc, the new head of 16/37 Com- munity Futures. “I’ve always had an in- lerest in community eco- nomic development,” said the: -Terrace-born and raised Leclerc, “Leclerc, who operated his own logging company for [5 years, says he hopes to use his experience to- assist’ business develop- ment in a depressed econ- omy. . At, the federally-funded Community Futures, Le- clerc says he'll have the Opportunity to help anyone from loggers to seamstres- ses. Since the program began, Community Futures has provided $11 million worth of loans to small bu- sinesses. “We offer the tools ne- cessary but we don’t do it for them,” said Leclere of his clients. “They take ow- nership.” So far, the Community Futures. program has cre- ated 3,571 jobs and brought $51 million into the’ northwest economy. Leclerc is taking over for Joe Whitney, who star- ted out at Community Fu- tures 13 years ago. “My first client under the self-employment pro- pram was an individual living in one of the worst homes [’ve ever been in for cleanliness,” recalls Whitney. “He painted pic- tures on sandpaper with Ropsickle sticks.” With some help from | - Whitney and Community Out & About Rigsby on big chamber A LOCAL businessman whose had a prominent role in reacting to the Skeena Cellulose crisis has been named to the. B.C. Chamber of Com- merce, Justin Rigsby, contraller for the Alm-Wood Group, was named a director on: the provincial chamber’s board at its annual general meeting May 23 in Fort St. John. Rigsby is a past chamber president here and h ais served on two city- organized forestry task forces in response to the SCI crisis.
