“For cur part it is not so -
much a coalition of political .
parties, but political parties ©
recognizing that you can’t
allow a party with 39 per
cent of the popular vote to
run the province,” said
Steve Cook of the North-
west Coalition of Dis-
satisfied Citizens.

“‘And to do that, you can’t
Split the vote. You must
recognize that,”’ said Cook.

Cook’s reference to 39 per
cent is the vote tally
received by the NDP in
1996, enough to gather a
majority of the seats in the
legislature.

The coalition’s main point
is that free enterprise parties
won't have a chance of
defeating the NDP as long
as they divide up the non-
NDP voters.

Cook wants the Reformers
and Liberals to not only
realize they can’t afford to
be separate, but to hold a
joint nomination meeting.

That way the best possible
candidate, regardless of
original political affiliation,
_ would be chosen, he said.

‘So if a person carried a
Liberal party card, that
wouldn’t necessarily mean
they would vote for a Liber-
al,”’ said Cook.

One possible method
being talked about is for the
Liberals and Reformers to
first nominate a candidate
each before having a joint
nomination meeling.

Another possible method
‘is to have any number of
Liberals and Reformers be
nominated and a winner
chosen at a joint session.

“We would then want a
preferential ballot until there
is a winner with 50 per cent
plus 1 of the votes,” said
Scott. :

‘That system features one
ballot listing all of the can-
didates, allowing voters ‘to
rank them by preference.
