Fuhr cruised to first-place in the 21-kilometre race with a time of 1:18:50. An over-40 masters runner, Fuhr beat his closest rival — Ter- race masters runner Gord Buxton — by more than a minute. “He was pretty rough on me,” Fuhr said of Buxton. “I think it could have gone cither way on the day.”’ Third place went to Prince Rupert’s Ray Leonard (1:23:13) aud Hazelton’s Dave Allwood (1:28:11) was fourth. All the top 21-k finishers were masters runners, The open event finishers were actually further back. Terrace’s Dave Cater was second in the open men’s 21-k, finishing at 1:30:08 just behind Houston’s Nipper Kettle. In the women’s half-marathon, it was another battle of the masters. Prince Rupert’s Rose Cheer proved to strong for Terrace’s Sue Simpson, finising first with a spectacular time of 1:24:17 — which was also good enough for fourth overall in the half- marathon. Simpson was about five minutes back, finishing with a still respectable time of 1:29:53. Simpson said she has only becn running since May, after taking time off to have two more chil- dren. And an injury kept her off the ; track all winter. She had both feet . in. casts for a few months with ‘stress fractures in both feet. . “I know my limits and I knew I just couldn’t keep wp with her,’”’ Simpson. said, adding she lost “sight of Cheer about halfway . through the race. But with more training, she hopes to be on the comeback trail o 21km victory next year, ; ; Danita Schreiber, of Kitimat, ha the fastest time inthe 21- kilometre open women’s event, finishing at 1:37:58. Trailing her was Terrace running duo Gail Sheasby and Diana Wood (both at 1:47:37), Terrace wheelchair racer Paul Clark rolled across the line ahead of everyone in the 21-kilometre wilh a time of 1:13:47. The 10-kilometre race belonged to the young. Telkwa’s Graham MacLean crossed the line first with his stunning time of 34:09. Two other Telkwa youth boys — Daran Clark and Liam Over- stall — tied for second overall at 38:34, Richard Joseph, of Hazelton was first in the open men’s 10-k, wilh a time of 38:51. He edged out fellow Hazelton runner Gor-’ don Wilson, who was sccond with a time of 40:27. Terrace’s Neil Fleischmann was seventh overall and first in the masters men’s event with his time of 41:21. Kitimat’s Anna Bernard was the first woman across the line at 41:33, which was also good enough for ninth overall. Terrace’s Rose Schibli was third in masters women with $1:38 chind Kitimat’s Pauline Klie. Marilyn Earl, of Terrace, was fourth. Five-kilometre race action saw another Smithers youth — Ryan Turner — finish first with a time of 16:32. Turner beat out Telkwa’s Kevin Silverson (17:05) by 30 seconds. Jason Patterson and Daren Gull, of Smithers, as well as Kitimat’s Dale Young, also had sub-20- minute times, Terrace’s Justin Keitch was the first local youth, finishing at the 21-minute mark, and Quinton Rafuse was another minute back. Nicole Slater, of Prince Rupert, was the woman to finish the five- kilometre race, crossing the line at 20:28, Rupert’s Cheryl Steele, the first open women's division finisher, - was second behind Slater at 21:12. Smithers’ Liz Allen, competing in youth women was third overall and second in her division at 21:19. ; Kathleen Yates, also of Smithers, was the first over-35 masters woman finisher, crossing the line at 23:25. Terrace masters Lynne Eastman (25:58) and Cathie Frezell (28:29) were sccond and third. Terrace’s Marsha Cater was second in the open women’s divi- sion at 24:37, about three and a half minutes back of Steele, Gord Froese, of Terrace, was first in the open men’s division with a time of 21:59. Boys competition saw Smithers duo Jan Fubr and John Courtliff tie for first at 23:28, Terrace’s Danny Anscms was a close third, just 21 seconds back. Jack Worobcy, of Terrace, was first in the masters men’s divi- sion, with a time of 24:24, edging out Dan Eastman by five seconds. The trophies were the same, but the faces had changed from last year as the winners in the ‘92 Terrace Dart Open came up to callect their prizes, Sunday Oct. 4.
