Page C2 — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 23, 1992 Life bean for 0 C0027 where the blue glaciers ‘oversce the thic kly timbered forest flanks that roll in smooth sweeps down to the valley floor of the Zymocts, It’sa wild place where the Pall hunts of giant bears are recorded in the sand, The river there is quick and loud. It’s a rugged. place to grow up. In the late spring of 1986, 0 C0027 was dividing her time be- tween avoiding larger predators and preying upon the tiny crea- tures that lurk between the river racks. ‘Two years later, alter with- standing -the floods. of: two -sca-~ sons, 0 C0027 had gained weight and ‘strength. Almost six: inches long now, she sustained ‘herself on a dict of salmon fry and grey- winged mayllies. In her third May 0 C0027 was 8. inches long. A rainbow trout. in-: miniature, her fierce nature fully developed. During that spring she felt the strong pull of the'sew and began the long journey that took An ep her through the turbulent waters of the wo canyons, out into the silt-laden walers of the Skcena. to ‘the brackish water below: Tyee — and finally to the ocean, 0 €0027's travels were lot donc. She moved north through the dark expanse, following. the windswept caastline for hundreds of miles, grazing on zooplankton and shrimp. Almost two years later, off the Aleutian Islands, 0 C0027 —~ now ‘a powerful 32-inch long fish weighing 14 potnds — felt an ir- resistible urge ‘to retrace an une cestral odyssey. She moved pur- poscfully through “the green _colimns of light navigating wn- ; erringly toward her home stream. “In-the approuch waters to the Skecna- she was joined by waves ’ of silver-sided sockeye aud pink , salmou.. The Skeena Angier by Rab Brown A half mile north of the spot the fishermen cali Slippery Rock, nearing Port Simpson, 0 C0027 could) move no mare, She thrashed frantically, but the force _ would not yield. Doug Round, who lives in Vic- toria but fishes the waters in Area: Four when ithe fishing is good, . began, bringing in his net soon after 0 C0027 became enmeshed in it. Round carefully picked her out of the net, slipped an orange tag” marked 0 CQ027 into the needle nosed gun provided him by the Ministry of the Environ- Ss ‘ment and poked it into her hide on the right side of her dorsal fin. Afler christening the fish and tossing her overboard, Round logged the tag number. along with the date and noted that the her Icft gill was slightly damaged. It was Tuesday, July 26th. The fleet had been fishing since Sunday and fortunately for 0 C0027 the boats would soon return to dockside. - “Despite seals and the Skeena’s other hazards, 0 C0027 reached the mouth of the Zymoetz a couple of weeks afler her near fa- ic upriver odyssey tal encounter wilh a gillnet with no new wounds, Over the course of the next weck she passed through Baxter’s Riffle, Blackie’s, the Wall and the strong water of the Lower cuyon. At the foot of Matson Canyon, in a run called The Pipe, she rested for a day then moved on past Kelly Creck, through the Trapper and past the Clore. At a run named for Skeena pioncer angler Ted Rawlins — a scenic sireich of river flanked by a rock wall and filled with the large boulders steelhead feel comfort able around, she rested again. It was there, on au overcast moming, that a muted gold fash caught her eye. The feeding in- stincts honed during her first three years of tile made 0 C0027 move to the strange creature that looked a little like a stonefly, a caddisfly and a baitfish all. at once. She bit it then Iet it go... Moments later it Was’ ‘above her again. Again 0-C0027-was'a vic. tim, of her instinct. She’ sinick: the. creature once more. This time the ereature bit back. The sharp pain - sent her into the air, She shook: her head trying to dislodge it then. ran to the tail of the pool in a vain attempt to fee it. . The searing pain turned .to a dull ache. After a few minutes she and a few more escape at- . tempts she was pulled up to the sandy stretch between the rocks - lining the run. ‘I slipped the hook from the hinge of her jaw and read the number on the spaghetti tag Doug, Round put in her. I, noted the damage to her gill and. net marks on lier nose. 0 C0027 bolted back into the - deeper water. She’s probably. far npstreant by now. Resting until May when she will spawn not far from the spot she was spawned Six years ago. SEPTEMBER 130 SPORTSMAN —_.
