Five paved tennis courts in Skeenaview Park are now at the design stage, and fund rais- — ing to pay for them is well under way. Members of the Terrace Tennis" club have done some fund raising on their own, and on June 15 the project got a major boost during the official opening of the Kin Hut. The Terrace Kinsmen Club donated $8,000 to the project and McDonald’s Restaurant donated $10,000. According to Terrace superin- tendent of parks and recreation Steve Scott, the tennis court pro- ject is only a part of a Terrace Kinsmen Club Skeenaview Park development program. Eventually, the park will feature the existing playground plus tennis courts, a softball diamond and a parking area. The existing playground will be relocated to the northwest cor- ner of the park, the tennis courts will be built between the Kin Hut and the playground, and the ball diamond will be located in the OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. Scott says Herb Dusdale, the city’s engineering foreman who designed last summer’s Halliwell St, upgrade, has a good knowledge of soil types and depth in the Skeenaview Park area and he has already done some preliminary tests. The depth of clay-type soil to gravel base is about one metre on the east side of the proposed tennis courts and about two metres at the western park boundary. - Scott explains, however, that they won't have to add gravel fill all the way to the existing gravel base. Current information suggests that something less than a metre of gravel fill will provide an adequate base for the tennis court pavement. He adds that the Kinsmen are now in the process of applying for a Go B.C. grant to cover one third of the estimated cost of $100,000 to $125,000 for the five tennis cours. This would set the community’s share of the cost of the project somewhere between $66,000 and $83,000. SUPPORTED BY THE CITY OF TERRACE
