Roderick Haig-Brown, who lived in Campbell River on Vancouver Island since the 1930's, will be best remembered for his many books on angling: classics which rank with those written by Isaac Walton, Roderick Haig-Brown was a very compassionate and sincere man with his feelings very much in evidence in his books. The Western Angler, Fisher- mans Fall and Return to a River, are some of the books which portray the man’s sensitivity antl feelings towards fish, wildlife and the outdoors that he ioved. As a conservationist, he had no peer. His deter- mination and fair judgement made friend and ‘oe respect him. In the 1950's, when the conservation movement in British . Columbia -was almost non-existant, he almost single-handedly fought the damming of the Upper Campbell River and the flooding of Buttle Lake in Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island. Buttle Lake is not a flooded reservoir with a legacy of dead trees sticking out of the water and debris floating on the surface, such as is the case with most of the power. dam reservoirs throughout the province. Thanks to Roderick Haig-Brown, the shorelines of lake are iy 8 - Clear and free. A tremen- dous achievement during a od of tlme when the ‘words ‘environment and conservation’ were -unknown.to most people. -At the 1966 convention of. the B.C. Wildlife Federation.. the" in: Prince : George, keynote speaker was Roderick Haig-Brown. I will - never forget the feeling and sincerity of his w these gathered in the con- vention hall tas (ay. His 8 wasn’ anol Pp hum address, it was right from his heart. I had a lump — in my throat and I know ; there was more than ore tear in the eyes of the Federation members. Roderick Haig-Brown was *phead of his time as a conservationist. Wildlife Federation, SPEC and the Sierra Club made a joint statement condemning e pipeline proposal. In the opinion of this consortium of conservation organizations, ' they feel that the impact of the pipeline could have a devastating effect, with the probability of a very large oil spill eventually taking place in Douglas Channel or along the north coast, The group had much more to say on the pipeline, all of whic. _eondemned its construction. It ig certainly good news fo hear that these con- servation organizations, on a province-wide ‘basis, are~- opposing the pipeline. They appear to be more con- cerned with what happens to this region than moat of us who livehere do! I said in an earlier column ap- roximately 100 jobs would created in Prince George and Kitimat, with some- temporary jobs when the pipeline is being constructed along with the taxes paid to communities which the pipeline passes through and where other facilities are located. Unfortunately, the long term benefits are few an Jet us not forget, the oil is for the U.S.A., not Canada. We are left with a legacy of the environmental damage from construction of the pipeline on land and the potential of a major oil spill in water. - nipelin MeKenzie Valley e proposal has been studied for two years while the Kitimat - Edmonton line has the benefit of only a few months of study. Trans Mountain . Pipelines are trying to stuff this thin down our throats withou adequate - stud and discussion. If, after two years of study, it could be pipeline would be safe, with very little environmental damage during construction and oi] spills could be eliminated, then I am sure most people would accept it as a viable project. It seems to me that those of us who are going to be effected the most by the ipeline going ahead should veicing our opinion. If you: are not happy with the pipeline proposal, I you join the sugges Steelhead Society, SPEC in . Kitimat or the Sierra Club in Smithers. They need your support.
