may . stare a, Auto theft rate shoots up AUTO-RELATED crime is skyrock- cling in Terrace and throughout the province, according to ICBC and Ter- race RCMP, The police report that thefts of cars and trucks in our city has doubled since last year, while thefts fom vehicles has increased 150 per cent, And the crime spree isn’t just limited to downtown. In residential areas, thefis of and from vehicles is up, on average, 165 per cent. In Thornhill, such thefts have increased a whopping 400 per cent. Today, across B.C, an average of 42 vehicles will be stolen, and police say this figure is on the increase, Appar- ently, no vehicle is safe, from trucks to family sedans, domestics to im- ports. Most of these have been recovered, indicating that many may have been joy-rides, But just why the numbers are up so dramatically is a bit of a mystery, “We really don’t know how to ac- count for the increases,’ says Con- stable Tracie Harvie of Terrace RCMP. “But crime is going up all over. The important thing is to.look at ways of deterring crime.” , Harvie says that even simple things like remembering to close windows and lock the car is an effective deter- rent for criminals. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans road- block was set up east of the Kalum River, Of the 350 vehicles stopped, 195 of those were checked for fish, firearms and wildlife. Two charges of retention of undersized trout netted anglers fines of $300 apiece, while two other anglers were each fined $250 for retention of chinook, In total, some $1,800 in fines were handed out.
