TWO TERRACE pioneers, Armand and Leonardt Bissonnette, visited Heritage
Park last week, Here they reminisce with museum director Mamie Kerby.

A visit from the past

HERITAGE PARK had some unique

‘visitors last week — two men who were

part of the cily’s pioneering history came
back to Terrace after more than a 30 year
absence.

Armond and Leonardt Bissonnette and
Leonard’s wife Rosemary (Tetrault) were
lreated lo a special reception at Heritage
Park by park director Mamie Kerby and by
Yvonne Mocn.

Amnond was born in his Park Ave, home
in 1924 and his brother Leonardt was bom
in 1931, Both boys attended the Kitsum-
kalum school, and: Leonardt remembered
having a teacher named Miss Longworth,

Today many in’Terrace know Miss Long-
worth as Aileen Frank, She was also on

The two brothers bad lived nearby Mamie
Kerby (then Haugland) and the three en-
joyed reminiscing about the families in Ter-
race at the time.

Armond was one of the early loggers in
Terrace, and had the first two-man’ power
saws in the area. Leonardt even remem-
bered its weight — 120Ibs, They were able
to see it again, since the saw now belongs
to the museum, something the brathers
were surprised to learn,

Big bike rolls around

FOR THE fourth year in a row, the big bike is coming to
the northwest.

You've probably seen it cruising through the downtown
in years past — thirly peaple on a welded frame, trying for
synchronized cycling, So far they haven't set any speed
records, ;

But one record which organizer Betty Campbell hopes to
break this year is that of the amount of money pledged.
Las year Terrace raised $31,542 for the Heart and Stroke
Foundation.

‘It was just fantastic,” says Campbell,

Throughout the northwest, a total of $57,000 was raised, °

The big bike will be in town. the. June-22-23 weekeid, - -

Eighteen separate rides are scheduled, and cach ride can
take up to 29 people, They'll be going all day, from 11:30
am. to 8:30 p.m,

Already Campbell says a large number of companies and
organizations have signed. up. If you're interested in gel

Volunteers are also needed on the weekend to help write
out tax receipts for pledges: If you can help, call Freda-at
ihe Volunteer Bureau at 638-1330.

Greenbelt waikers

ABOUT 63 people came out for the 2nd annual Howe
Creek Walkathon on May 26. About $1,080 has been col-
lected from pledges so far, and organizer Lori Merrill says
the money is still coming in. |

One of the more generous donations was made by a
group of young environmentalists, called Kids For Saving
Earth. They're a group of youngsters’ in grades 4-7 at
Thornhill Elementary. ,

The Greenbelt Assoc. organized the walk, as part of au
effort to raise awareness about the impartance of the Howe
Creek lands. The group is trying. to raise money to buy
more parcels of land to create a linear park along the back
side of the horseshoe area. a

The Association’s next planned event is a family picnic
in August,
