- 15 - Dangers of Pesticides: In addition to the case histories and laboratory tests listed earlier in this study, the following is also noted. In a fact sheet (Attachment V) distributed by Thelma MacAdan, it states: "*Cancer in the last quarter of a century can be considered @ social disease, a disease whose cause and control are rooted in the technology and economy of our society.’ Dr. U. Saffiol, U.S. National Cancer Institute According to the World Health Organization and the B. C. Cancer Foundation, between 80% and 90% of all cancers are environmentally caused ~ in other words, by things we touch, eat or breathe.... Did you know that cancer is the leading cause of death for children under 15? Babies are now born with a heavy burden of residues that will continue to accumulate until the body breads down.... Pesticides and herbicides are insidious killers. We are often exposed without knowing and they do not leave Tingerprints.... A weed is not as important as a healthy child...." Dr. John Blatherwick, Medical Director of the Simon Fraser Health Unit, School District # 43, has said, "All herbicides are dangerous, by their very nature and effectiveness. It's a weighed risk." Mr. Bram Hoogendoorn, Parks Superintendent, Port Coquitlam, stated at the Committee's Public Committee meeting on this topic that these (listed) chemicals are "all dangerous if inhaled," i) Young Children: Dr. Ruth Shearer notes that children are “much more susceptible" since they have "fewer enzymes to detoxiify with." She further states that young test animals react to carcinogens at much lower doses than adult animals. In daily life, she believes this can be reflected in the fact that adults often take 20 years to show cancer, but that Children can have tumours in their first year. li) Illegality of "Safe When Used as Directed" Labels: In addition, Dr. Shearer points out that in the U.S. at least, it is illegal and considered false "“misbranding" under the Code of Federal Regulations on Labelling of Pesticides for manufacturers to state on any labels that any pesticide is safe or non-toxic with or without the clause "if used as directed.”
