Dear Sir: I say cheers and con- ‘Bratulations to health care report released by the Ro- manow Commission. _ - In his report Mr. Roma- “now not only advocated the continuation of a pub- ‘licly funded national “Medicare program, but ‘also. recognizes and im- “plores the necessity of our federal and provincial gov- ernmenis to immediately inject the billions of dol- lars needed to preserve our national public health care program as provided for in the Canada Health Act. In his report he also in- dicates to do so is practi- cal and affordable. This Goes: not have to be a fi- nancial burden to individ- ual Canadians. ~The funding to achieve ‘these ideals is readily available. This can be achieved through the much quoted surplus of billions of dollars that Paul Martin has alluded io in the past. Much of this surplus was achieved through the drawback of the employ- ‘ment insurances at the ex- pense of laid off workers ‘and those terminated as a result of permanent plant ‘closures. “The message was a Solid rejec- tion of privatizing our Medicare or, in simple words, sellling health care for profit.” It is refreshing that as a result.of the commission’s extensive interviews and a solid rejection of priva- tizing our Medicare or, in “simple words, selling health care for profit. I urge all residents in the Skeena riding to im- mediately contact their M.P. Andy Burton and the M.L.A. Roger Harris to en- sure that they support and will ‘actively stand up ‘in the House of Commons and -the Legislature to lobby that the key ele- ments of the Romanow re- commendations will be enacted immediately. Our publicly funded Medicare system, which provides extensive health care. needs for all Cana- dians regardless of. their individual income stature, is what differentiates Ca- nada as a caring compas- sionate society as opposed: to. many other industria- lized countries. ‘As an example we need look no further than to our neighbours in the south. To Mr. Burton and Mr. Harris, it is not your man- date to dismantle our Medicare system so that you can facilitate health. care providers who will only provide this service for profit. This would be accom- _plished on the backs of the sick and dying throughout Canada. research with health care: givers: and: ‘ “ordinary” Cari: jnadians from “all, walks of” on \life, that the message was: | CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Keep health care public sue, I say support the Roma- now’s Commission in an attempt to build a just and equal society for all, espe- cially in respects to the providing of health care. And ] would also urge the city to encourage businesses downtown to de- corate as well. This is a dark time of the year with short days and so we should try to brighten up downtown by adding lights. I am proud of living in Terrace and I hope you are, too. I really enjoy what the city has done with the grass in front of 7-Eleven and with the trees in front of Save-On-Foods. All that is great and I would really encourage more of that but | would teally like to see the downtown de- corated with more Christmas lights. I want people to come to Terrace and come away leaving it feeling “wow, what a great little town.” Thad heard that there was a group put together to decorate the downtown but ] have yet to see what they have done, I was recently downtown observ- ing ali the places and trees that. the city could decorate. There are numer- ous places. — I know for a fact that people would love it. Who wouldn't? Christmas is about more then just presents, it’s about the light that Shines in our hearts. We will be continuing this tradition in years to come, and sincerely want to thank everyone who has contributed to this year’s success. | Sead tele GENERAL BN, aE Leite (EN. XOU LE .
