Last week, Alisa
Thompson, Helen Hasel-
meyer and [ spent two
hours with Gordon and
Bertha Watmough tour-
ing their beautiful proper-
ty in search of old trees.

Gordon told us about
his orchard and the many
different types of fruit
trees he has,

We could tell that he is
very proud of his orchard,
' Some of his trees date
back to before the First
World War.

Many earlier _ settlers
were encouraged by the
federal government 1o
grow fruit trees on their
homesteads. Much of that
fruit was sent to fairs in
Prince Rupert, Vancouver
and Edmonton,

Many of the settlers
came home with prizes
for the great quality of
their produce,

Alisa Thompson is cur-
rently working on a pro-
ject cataloguing and
dating all the heritage
trees in Terrace,

She needs everyones
help to identify heritage
trees in the city,

I's that time of year again. Summer Is just around the
corner. The leaves are green, the flowers ara blooming, and
the birds are singing. Saon the kids will be out of school and
looking forward to having fun in the sun. Many of them will
participate in recreational activities such as hiking, camping
and canoeing. Others will travel, read a book and visit family,
t is also that time of the year when Visitor Programs are
implemented throughout BC in our beautiful provincial parks,

The purpose of these Visitor Programs Is to educate the
public about nature, conservation, the ecology and
importance of protected areas, and cultural history. Subjects
range from habitat to birds of prey to weather. There is
something for everyone. Our purpose is not only to educate,
but o also have fun, There will be lots of crafts, games, trail
walks and storytelling for everyone to enjoy, In addition, look
for special guests who will give talks on the local
environment and the history of Northwest BC.

Visilor Programs allow tourists and the locai
communities to have a safe and enjoyable park visit while
learning how and why we should keep our parks sata, quiet,
clean, and natural. Visitor programs allows people of all
ages to have fun while learning more about their local
environments,

To all those parents oul there that ara making their list of
things-to-do for thelr children this summer, remember to
include Lakelse Lake Provincial Park Visitor Programs.

1999 TAX NOTICES

The 1999 Tax Notices were mailed on May 26, 1999.
Any property owner who has not received a lax notice
should contact the City of Terrace at 635-6311,

HOMEOWNER GRANTS

The Home Owner Grant must be applied for annually,
Please complete the Application on ike bottom of the tax
notice if you are eligible, and relurn it to the City of
Terrace before July 2, 1999 to avoid any penalty.

PAYMENT OF TAXES

Property owners are responsible for payment of taxes.
This may also apply to persons acquiring property prior to
the payment due date of July 2, 1999,

Payments sent by mail
MUST BE RECEIVED AT CITY HALL BY JULY 2, 1999.

A PENALTY OF 10% WILL BE ADDED TO OUTSTANDING
1999 TAXES AFTER JULY 2, 1999.

The City recommends forwarding a postdated cheque to
avoid any penalties or lang line ups at City Hall.
