S THE CHASE IS ON: Terrace’s wamen's rugby team at a practice before losing to the Smithers Humpies in _ a tournament there May 8, The team is still looking NORTHCOAST RUGBY UNION for a name and more players to round out rugby ac- tion. Their next game here is May 30 at the North- west Gommunity College fields. Northmen, women down in Smithers By DAVID D, HULL THE NORTH Coast Rugby Union season kicked off with two games in Smithers, Saturday May 8, seeing both.the senior men and women's side go down in defeat. - The:already weather-delayed season opener was played under sunny skies but quite cool conditions. The Camel’s new home, Camelot II, a! the Smithers archery grounds has yet to start growing prass making the play-~ : ing surface hard and unforgiving. The ‘‘as yet un-monikered’’ Terrace women’s team took on the Smither’s Humpies in a seven-a-side game to start off the evening events that saw the Terrace lasses defeated 17-5 in a hard-fought game. The Humpies opened the game carly with a quick try and conversion to take a 7-0 lead. Undaunted, the Ter- race ‘squad responded with a spec- tacular try with Clara ‘‘Bell’’ Marinus streaking pas! the Humpies defenders. With the conversion being missed, the Humpies clung to a narrow 7-5 lead at the end of the half. The second half was a see-saw battle with the Humpies scoring the evening’s second try early in the sec- ond stanza for five more’ points, miss- ing’ a two-point conversion op- portunity. Leading 12-5, the Humpies put on pressure for an insurance try late in the game and were rewarded with three minutes to play. Yet another missed conversion kick posted the final score at 17-5, Caplain Terry ‘‘Truck’’ Gordon and coach Willie McCleary were pleased with the performance of their side, “We have an awful lot of new players this season and a number of our veterans could not make the trip due to commitments so all in all we were very successful,’’ McCleary of- “We were a little shy of expe- rience in a few key spots and we still put up a great fight,”’ fered after the final whistle. The Northmen senior men’s team took on the Camel’s in the second match of the night and put up a valiant effort in a 20-0 loss. The Camel's have had good success over the winter tecruiting new players including a couple of gargantuan young forwards. Due to. work and personal commit- ments the Northmen were missing a few desirous veteraus but offered up a quality side and a good competition. The Céincls took a 10-0 lead into the half time break and never looked back. The Northmen worked. deep into Camel territory several times with a series of second and third phase plays but just fell short of chalking up points on the scoreboard. With a few lucky breaks late in the second half favouring the Camels in- cluding Kevan Latawske’s try, Latawske, the ‘‘Camel soon to be Northmen’’ who is moving to Terrace ran more than 60 yards, some say five yards short of his maximum range, to score in the corner. A conversion and a penalty goal rounded out the Camel scoring at 20. Northmen game captain Emie Dus- dal was content with his lads play. ‘We were a little shy of experience in a few key spots and we still put up a great fight,’? Dusdal said, ‘Next weekend we should be back to full strength with all our veterans and it should be a totally different game,”’ The Northmen practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Northwest Com- munity College. The club has a boys team for lads aged 13-18, a senior men’s team for men over 18 and a women's side for females aged 13 and older. The season is still young and it’s not t late to give rugby a try.
