A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 12, 1998 Business licence activity Is beginning to increase THE NUMBER of business licences issued by the city has increased since April, stopping a slight downward trend that began in January. To the end of July, there were 1,222 active business licences, an increase from 1,206 in April. Still, that’s down from the 1,274 on the books at the end of January, From January to the end of July, city records indi-. cates there were 162 lapsed licences, 79 new licences issued and 14 renewals. The majority of the licences that weren't renewed happened from January to April. Much the same is being reported by the Terrace and District Chamber of Com- merce. Manager Bobbie Phillips said the number of chamber memberships has held steady this year. Chamber of com- merce membership holding steady. “We're on target for this year,” said Phillips of the chamber goal of breaking the 400-membership mark. She estimates chamber membership now stands at 385. ‘'We're told that each year you can count on losing up to 10 per cent of: your mem- bership,” said Phillips. ‘We've never come close to that. At the most, we’ve lost seven per cent.”’ Phillips did concede that business. is slow in some quarters but that business al- ways experiences ups and downs, “T's a psychology.
