Family woman passes away A VERY special lady, Edna Christine Amos, passed away on May 26 this year at Mills Memerial Hospital. Edna Amos (nee Stephens) was a very proud lady. She had good reason to be; she was of Gitksan stock. Edna was a member of the Skogumlaha Wilp, from Kit- segukla. Her father was of Scot- tish descent, Edna was bor on October 5, 1920 in Hazelton to Charles and Martha Stephens.. She had four brothers —- Emie, Harold,- Joe and Bill and two sisters —- Rebecca and Rosie. Her father Charles passed away on April 8, 1931 while Edoa was still a young child. Her mother died on April 23, 1970. Both are now buried in Hazelton, Edna also lost a sister, Rebecca and two. of fier brothers, Emie and Harold, And in the year she lost her mother, 1970, she also lost her favourite _ Son-in-law, Harold YVONNE MOEN _ ‘flowers of her garden, and she loved her garden very much, She was always thankful that she never outlived any of her kids. She used to say she could not bear it if that happened, _Edna has had few regrets. She always said if you work hard you don't have to pay attention to gossipers. Parks In the Northwest have been bullt around the long history of salmon fishing. The fishermen have fished Lakelse Lake and the Skeena river and its tributaries from the ocean to the Terrace area. For many years the money earned trom the fishery has meant growth and prosperity, supporting the econamy of the area. The fishing industry bath commercial and sports continues to bring tourists to the Terrace and Kitimat areas. As you drive from Smithers to Prince Rupert there are several parks along the way for you to stop and enjoy. At Klaanza Creek you can imagine you are In the gold rush and pan for gold, stay In the beautiful park there or continue \ on to campgrounds jike Prudhomme Lake. As you approach Prince Rupert one of the historic sites of great interest is the oldest remaining salmon cannery out of the 220 In British Columbia. The North Pacific Cannery was foundgd in 1888 on the north shore of the Inverness passage, the north arm of the Skeena Aiver mouth. In those days peopte of several athnic backgfaunds came to work at the plant and fish. There were the local Indian families who lived in the Indian villages: there were the Japanese people who worked as fishermen, boat builders and carpenters and thera wera the Chinese workers who wére responsible for processing ihe salmon. They wera responsible for processing the salmon from the time it arrived on the dock to where it was tinned and boxed for shipping.
