Queensway sewer cost draws a mixed reaction TERRACE — Most Queensway area residents accept the need for a new sewer sysiem, according to the resulls of a recent survey. -But so far only just over half of respondents are prepared to pay for one. The ‘questionnaire. was distrib- uted to the more’ than 70 area ~-pesidents: who attended: a Feb; 18~-- public meeting to discuss the cur- rent proposal to build a $1.9 mil- lion low-pressure sewer system covering Queensway and Chur- chill Drive. - Seventy-three per cent of the 52 respondents said there was a need for a community sewer system in at Jeast a portion of the Qucens- way area. Sixty-three. per cent said the system proposed for the entire area is nceded. But when asked if they support _the proposal as presented, :the number dropped to 54 per cent. “There’s high recognition . of the need,- but support ‘scems. to- diminish when it comes to the is- sue of paying for it,” noted Kitimat-Stikine regional district administrator Bob Marcellin. “Some people are questioning being in the service area and hav- ing to contribute to the cost since their septic systems are working Recent results from the courts TERRACE — Here are convic- tions tesulting from recent cases heard in Terrace provincial court: - January 18 Wilbur Conrad Abrahams was convicted of sexual assault. He was sentenced to two months in jail to be served intermittently. Bernadette Marida Chaboyer pleaded guilty to failing to appear in cour. Wiege was fined $300 and is prohibited from driving for one year. Just over 10 per cent of owners of systems 10 years old or newer - Jeported having problems. But that number leaps to 60 per cent among owners of systems that are more than 10 years old. The number of 11- to 20-year- old problem sysicms was 54 per cent, Sixty-three per cenl of sys- tems older than. 20 years had problems. The regional district plans to host more public meetings before directors set a date for the referendum.
