4 Terrace Review — Wednesday, September 9, 1987 ; an : o, ne a Poe Wheelchair pioneer. = heads forbig city |, TERRACE — Kelvin Skead, whose bright smile and adven- turous spirit have made him a welcome and familiar encounter for (in all probability) about half the people in Terrace over past years, left the community last week to begin a new and inde- pendent lifestyle in Vancouver, Kelvin was a familiar figure’ - on Terrace streets as he travelled about in his electric wheelchair, but he also broke a vast amount { of new ground for disabled peo- > ple who live here. -. Born in Terrace 22 years ago, { Kelvin was the first student con- fined to a wheelchair to go through the entire local public school system. As he moved up- ward through the grades, Park- side, Upland, Clarence Michiel, Cassie Hall, Skeena and Caledonia Schools all acquired the bars, ramps and fixtures that would accomodate later students with handicaps and disabilities. Kelvin’s mother Marg Skead remarked that, unlike some other areas, ‘‘The local school district was really good about it.” 7 . When the Terrace Child De- velopment Centre opened in its new building on Eby St., Kelvin was there to cut the ribbon. . He said he’s pleased with ac- cess. ramps that have recently been installed on some of the local sidewalks, but he also recalled some rather dramatic spills he’s taken on a couple of ‘them that have design flaws. .
