McLean Ltd. of Charlottetown were factors forcing him out of business. George Spetifore, owner of an $8-million potato processing plant, said earlier this month he cannot get financial assistance from the B.C. government and will have to shut the operation down. He said the subsidy amounts to only about a quarter of a cent a pound on products shipped from New Brunswick to Vancouver. An official of the McLean firm said his company cannot be ac- cused of trying to. put Spetifore out of business because the P.E.I. firm does not ship its product west of Ontario. Cam MacLean also noted that his firm purchased “‘a big per- centage” of Spetifore’s finished product last year because the PEI. operation was short of french fries. The statement added that during the last couple of months McCain Foods has reduced the price and increased promotion of some of its potato products on a national basis. By STEPHEN SCOTT OTTAWA (CP) — A committee of major churches and Liberal and Conservative MPs has succeeded in the first step of what it hopes is a major campaign ta outlaw hard-core por- nographic pictures. f the committee succeeds, magazines showing things such as child sex and beastiality will be outlawed. First success was Commons agreement last week torefer nine private bills mostly dealing with a definition of obscenity and with child sex to the House justice committee. It is hoped that com- mittee will return in a couple of months with a recommendation that the overnment amend the minal Code to define obscenity. Such a definition would mean law enforcement officials and customs agents would be able to say a photograph is illegal and the magazine containing it should be banned. Application of the law varies from community to community. “It's just crazy the way the law operates today,” Rev. Brad Massman, director of social action of the Roman Catholic ar- chiocese of Toronto said Monday in an interview.
