MEXICO CITY (CP) —

. About 240,000 Canadians
visit this Spanish-s peaking
country each year and drop
$100 million into its economy
while seeing little more than
the Pacific Coast city
Acapulco,

But older, tess-hectic
Mexican cities also have
plenty to offer curious
visitors with a week or so to
spare.

Unlike Acapulco, 500 kilo-
metres south of _ this
sprawling, high-altitude
capital, there is no in-
ternational airport in Taxco, ©
Cuernavaca or Puebla, but
they are easily accessible to
those who do‘ not mind
travelling by bus or
automotile.

Four-hundred-year-old
Taxco perches on a moun-
tainside 200 kilometres south
of here and its economy-
depends largely on its richly-
dgverved fame as a silver

The lustrous white metal is

extracted from five different
mines in thedry, rounded
highlands, refined and then
handcrafted in the silver
factories and shops found
throughout the city.

But don’t expect many
bargains — they disap-~
peared when silver prices
soared on world markets.
The cost of Taxco’s sterling
objects reflect those prices
as well as higher labor costs

on foot because the dearth of
parking space and narrow,
eobblestoned streets make
motoring difficult.

Like all Mexican resort
centres, this city of 60,000 is
loaded with hotels and

tourists. Unlike most others,
it also has resorts for the
exclusive use of government
bureaucrats.

Puebla, 200 kilometres
northeast of Mexico City is

central Mexico, it was not
built ou the site of an existing
Indian city but was planned
andbuilt from scratch by the |
Spanish. It is well-known for
its flamboyant colonial
architecture and antique and
tile shops;
If you want a real bargain
in antiques,  Puebla's
Callejon de Los Sapes. ~ or
Lane of the Frogs — is the
place to visit. Here you'll
find 100-and 200-year-old
chests, furniture, masks,
weapons and other items
that can be purchased’ for
less than they would cost in
Canada or the United States.
But be prepared to
bargain. Haggling is ex-
pected in most Mexican
shops or markets.
