FISHERIES ENHANCEMENT PROPOSAL - HYDE CREEE PROJECT SUMMARY: Most of Hyde Creek is dry during the summer months. It is proposed to add water from a new well or a watermain near Coast Meridian Road and convert the dry portions of the creek bed to good fish habitat. This project would be in 3 phases: Phase I - Feasibility Study Phase I - Design and Construction of Water Source & Creek Bed Phase III - Operation & Maintenance of Facilities ECONOMIC BENEFITS AND CONSIDERATIONS: Projects like the "Children’s trout fishery” in the Lions Park area of Port Coquitlam will realize a return value because enhancement in one area will affect another. Spawning fish retuming to this area or new fish introduced at points along creeks and rivers will have a better chance of survival if sections of the creek are improved. This project is consistent with the regional goal of balancing fish culture with semi-natural enhancement techniques, witich enhance the survival of existing wild fish and fish frorn release programs. It wiil also focus attention on a local stream that is shared by two electoral districts benefitting two municipalities; Port Coquidam and Coquitiam. ELECTORAL DISTRICTS: Hyde Creek in the northem section passes through the electoral district of Mission/Coquitlam and in the south through Port Moody/Coquitlem. PUBLIC INFORMATION/PARTICIPATION: We have contacted a local High School in the vicinity of Hyde Creek to determine if there is any interest in participating in this project should it be approved. We would like the Environmental Club of Terry Fox High School and the Poco Fish & Game Club to help with such items as monitoring of water levels, local advertising of the project through school newletters, posting signs regarding stream enhancement, etc. This would be an excellent example of local populations being responsible for the local environment.
