Southern games prove valuable for Cal’ S girls THEY PLAYED seven games in just four days and the captains of Cale- donia’s girls basketball team say the team is bet- ter for it. “It was an awesome ex- perience, just to see what we're up against when we go to provincials,” says Shelley Muir, 17. The Kermodes are the “only AAA basketball team in the northwest which means they earn an auto- matic berth to the provin- cial championships. In order to get a taste of the high level play the team’s coach, Dave Craw- ley, Signed the girls up for a Victoria tournament and four exhibition games. _ The girls logged a 63-58 win against St, Margaret's and lost by very slim mar- gins against Coquitlam’s Gleneagle (58-53) and Vietoria’s Spectrum (38- 28). The remaining games saw the Kermodes lose to very talented teams like Saanich’s Stelly School which boasts a six-foot-six tall player - a challenge for a team who’s tallest player is five-foot-nine. And Jan. 3-5 nine Ter- race bantam reps are heading to Fraser Lake to try out for the Under-16 northwest team. So far 44 teens are set to attend the try-outs but only 20 will be selected. The team will play at the Best Ever CCM Cup in Salmon Arm Apr. 11-13. The coaching staff for the zone 7 team consists of head coach John Amos, assistant coach Tim Leduc from Kitimat and team manager Ken Rutsatz from Terrace.
