If it wasn’t for this job 1 gave you helping me run my health elub, you’d be working as a lowly clerk somewhere, You’re father, my brother, was toa busy drinking ta give you an education.” Nelson lowered his head and mumbled his thanks. His uncle loved putting him down, “You haven't done a bad job, Nelson. So I’m going to lel you to run the place while I open up anather branch.” For thtee years, Nelson managed the club. And the members loved him. He always went the extra mile. The towels were always fresh, the machines always clean, the floors always, * swept. And unlike his grumpy uncle, he always had a smile on his face. One day, he was sitling at the counter having a coffee with Allister, one of the members. “You do a smashing job, Nelson. Your uncle must be paying you a fortune.” The smile left Nelson’s face. “Actually, I get minimum wage. But ’'m not complaining. If it wasn’t for my uncle, I'd have no decent job. Allister looked horrified, “Nelson, he’s abusing you. You are a superb manager. If you start your own club, I will be your silent partner and provide the capital,” Nelson couldn't believe his ears. For the first time in his life, he was walking tall. The next time the uncle visited the club, Nelson approached him. “Uncle, I’ve run the operation for three years. I want a raise. I want.. Nelson took a deep breath “.1 want $30,000 a year.” His uncle almost keeled over, BASED ON ACTUAL COURT CASES “You're out of your mind, you ungrateful wretch. Without me you'd be a a nobody.” Nelson felt a huge release of tension as he said: aa | quil.” A few weeks later one of the uncle's employees ran into his office. “You wou't believe it. Nelson opened up a health club. Just like ours, And just a few blocks away. We're losing business.” Without a word, the uncle jumped up and drove straight to his lawyer. “Sue my ungrateful nephew. Let's put him back in the guiter.” In court, the uncle argued: “Your Honour, I gave my nephew a job only to be stabbed in the back. I taught him everything he knows about the health club business. Nelson used this information to open his own club and drive mine out of business. Shut him down.” Nelson glared at his uncle as he argued his case. “Your Honor, I practically ran my uncle’s business but he wouldn’t even give me a raise. I opened my own business so I would be rewarded for my hard work. [nev- ér meant to steal his customers.” Should Nelson have to close his business? You Be The Judge.
