POLICE CREDIT quick thinking on the part of a Jackpine Flats couple in helping them ab five break-and-enter suspects, The man spotted three people leaving a neigh- bour’s house around noon on Nov. 17. His wife called the RCMP his own vehicle. RCMP said they caught up with the suspect vehicle heading southbound on Hwy37. One Terrace man and two youths were arrested. Police recovered stolen property from the vehicle and from the three suspects. RCMP said the seizure led them to arrest two more youths, Pollce said all five have been charged with. break- and-enter, theft, aud posses- sion of stolen property. But how many of us could af- ford to write a cheque to the Bank of Canada io clear up our share for our entire family ? Is there an- other way we could do our part? The bartering system, an. ex- change of goods, perhaps volunteer hours..? How about common sense and decency? Statistics Canada has just released figures from a study of male violence against women. It says 29 per cent of Canadian women who had been or are mattied have experienced violence from their current or previous partaer, That’s 1 in 3, So what? What does that have to do with the country’s debt? Think about the services fe- quired because of that violence Think about the services required because of that violence against women and children. against women and children. Transition houses and their staff, police officers, crisis — line workers, mental health staff, child care workers, i¢acher’s aides, doctors, nurses, lawyers, judges, court reporters, violence counselors, employment counselors, financial assistance workers, social workers, cemetery staff. Whe pays for all those services, the salaries, offices, cars, desks, photocopiers, computers, iele- phone and hydro bills, reams of paper, etc,, etc? Government, ei- ther directly or indirectly. And they pay for it in every day and in every community in this country! So doesn’t it make sense to use a little common sense and decency. If you know someone who uses their power to victim- ize, do something about it. Tell them violence is not ac- cepiable — it hurts, physically, the pockeibook! Or, call the authorities, they al- ready know the costs involved — they7ll respond immediately. If you. are a batterer. help is available, Call someone.
