Like other government officials whose work takes theni into unknown — or _ Ititle known parts’ of the country, ‘the Do- minion Land Surveyors of the Topo- graphical Survey, Department of . the Interior, who ere the real pioneers of Western Canda, have always brought baek photographs of the country thro’ which their surveys took them; it was early recognized that these views were yery ¥aluable addition to the know- ledge of the country and its resources. Thus it. was that 2 cameron and suffi- cient films or plates became a regular part of the ‘surveyors instrument equipment, and there has grown up at Ottawa e very large collection of pho- tographs. This collection has during recent yearsbeen diversified by the ad- dition of views taken in. th eolder provinces of the east where the. topo- graphienl survey prties are noy also operating. These photographs include a great | range of subjects ‘such as surveying operations; methods of transportation types of country, timber, and vegeta- tion; historic sites; natives, wild life; and natural fetures (rivers, waterfalls lakes, mountnins and valleys. ‘ In addition ‘to this Glass of photo- graphs, the Topographical Survey has two other extensive series of views tnken expressly for surveying purposc These are the photo-topographical and aerial pictures.; It was early vecog- nized thet surveys made by ordinary methods in a mountainous area like the rockies and sufficiently ‘detailed to furnish information for an accurate map would be prohibitive on account of the cost. The late Surveyor. Gen- eral Dr, BH. Deville, therefore adont- ed ini developed the science of map making from photographs. These are taken with o surveying camera from prominent poluts of the Innd scape, and during the winter months the sur- veyor plots the map from enlargement of his photographs. ‘This method ‘has been successfully used in mapping a good many forest reserves and -nation- al parks. It was also the methed by which the typography along the boun- dary between Alberta and British Col- umbin, the crest of the rocky. moun- tains, Was surveyed and mapped. It is being used this season. in railway belt of British Columbia. for the pro- duction of topographic maps of that mountninous aren. =. ; : This series of photographs contain many striking scenes. As it Is usual to take pictures from each station in n conplete circle, a whole panorama | is reyenled. In some directlons the ‘mountain tops extend. as far as the eye can sce, 1 nanother direction is n mountain stream tumbling on ‘its: way to the ocean through a rock walled valley, or emerging from a grert gln- cler under the infiuence of the increns ing heat of the sun's direct rays. “All Classes of mountain scenery .are here depicted and many of these views, probably th emajority, are the only ones in existance of the respective lo- callty. - It must be added that as these -| photographs’ are. taken for .surveying purposes, the surveyor. is more inter- ested in. getting certain plotting infor- mation than in artistie effects; hence some. of the photographs. may seem; un- interesting as pictures. are . ‘Phe: areal: photographs are very, re- Jtanned 4 SRee.
