THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER TEN YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVIC WINS INTERNATIONAL PRAISE NTERNATIONAL First Vice-Presi- dent Claude Ballard has warmly commended Local 1-357 for a uni- que ten-year record of leadership in community service activities. This record is held to be outstanding in the International Union’s campaign to promote I|WA support of the AFL- ClO program of community service ty MD oe Wyman Trineer y y Stu Alsbury The IWA—United By Wyman Trineer President, Local 1-357 |WA, New Westminster When members of the Trade Union Movement in New Westminster are asked what is their contribution to the community besides their negotiations for wages, hours and working conditions they point to Labour’s role in the local united appeal, the United Good Neigh- bour Fund. This is particularly true of the IWA Local 1-357, whose members have served on the Fund’s Board of Di- rectors since its inception in 1954, and who have provided top executive mem- bers for the fund over the years. IWA members in Local 1-357 can be proud of their contribution, because they were a “prime mover” in 1954, along with the New Westminster Cham- - ber of Commerce, of this new approach to united fund raising. It was at the instigation of these two groups that the Community Chest concept was dropped and replaced by a truly representative donor organization. The idea of a United Good Neighbour Fund was “borrowed” from cities a few miles away in the United States, but the local group was bent on providing the community with an organization that would be truly representative. This -was accomplished in the writing of the Constitution and By-Laws. These By- Laws provide for one third of the _Board’s directors to be elected from Labour, one third from Industry, and the balance from a General category, comprising professional, business and women’s groups. activities headed by the Internation- al Vice-President. The Royal City Local Union has been able to answer affirma- tively the major question raised at the May AFL-CIO conference in Miami with regard to mean- ingful participation by trade unions in community action Albert Rose Plays Leading Role In John Hachey They went one step farther, and also provided that the Presidency should ‘rotate among these three groups and that all committees should adhere to this pattern. It is believed that this is the only fund organization among 2300 on this continent with this provision. It is possible that this unique type of organization also encouraged three agencies that are not found together in any other fund to participate. They are Red Cross, Heart, and Cancer Appeals. The “founding Fathers” of the United Good Neighbour Fund were to set a pat- tern for the participation of the Lumber Industry over the years. The first Presi- dent was a Lumber executive—the first Secretary, the late Lawrence Vandale— financial secretary of Local 1-357, IWA, and the first campaign chairman, Rae Eddie, MLA, recording secretary of the IWA Local 1-357 and IWA international trustee. Another IWA signature on the charter was Sandy Naylor who later went into the customs service. The posi- tion had been vacant for six months, and the annual campaign two months away, when Bill Wilson became Executive Di- rector and Campaign Chairman. Local 1-357 also plays an important part in the provision of volunteer can- vassers annually who collect 46% of the campaign in the employee solicita- tion.
