A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 6, 1996 Watmough plans comeback IT WON’T come as much surprise, but Les Watmough is going to take another run at local politics. The longtime former regional district director for Thomhill — defeated three years ago by Peggy Julseth — admits he’s planning a comeback. “Things happened over the last three years that shouldn’t have happened through the regional dis- trict,’ Watmough says. He’s particularly = con- cemed about the prospect of Thomhill amatagamating with Terrace, which he says will go against the interests of Thornhill, Thornhill neglected, he says “Terrace is dominating and controling the agenda,’’ he says, ‘“Every- thing benefits them.’' And that will get even worse, Watmough claims, if Terrace succeeds in gaining control of a large chunk of land surrounding the airport for an industrial park, Gaining the airpon lands would take away the one bargaining chip. Thornhill has —- room for Terrace to expand... Watmough says losing that chip would put Thomhill in a poorer negoli- ating position to gain the in- frastructure improvements it wants to get out of restruc- luring. “If they're successful in that little operation, that changes the whole thing.” What happens if Thornhill amalgamates and there is no Thornhill seat on the regional district for Wat- mough to chase? He has in the past told Mayor Jack Talstra he would run against him — and win — because “nobody -in Thornhill is going to vote for you,” And Watmough doesn’t rule out that possibility, Les Watmough Rural fire protection on again FIREFIGHTERS IN Thornhill are once again responding to calls in out- lying areas. The protection extends to Old Remo, Lakelse Lake, and Thomihill out to Ziegler Road. In late Novernber firefighters voted to cut off the service, saying their as- sociation couldn’t continue ta operate in those areas, unless residents helped pay for the costs. But Thornhill deputy chief Art Hilt says that’s changed - - at least for the time being. He says the Fire Marshall's office in Prince George is currently in the pro- cess of profiling the Terrace and Thomhill fire departmeuts, and will make reccomendations on their abililies to respond, and how the two Iacal fire departments should be organized. And until those recommendations come down, Hill says the fire pro- tection in the outlying arcas will con- tinue. ‘We've talked to people in those areas and explained it’s a control situation, rather than a preventative one,’’ Hill says. ‘We will respond if we're not com- mitted somewhere else,” Since service resumed late last year, Hill says fire crews have responded to News In Brief City to study both sides — six calls in the affected areas. “There hasn’t been a compromising situation yet, but that’s a very real possibility,’ he says, Hill expects to the see the Fire Mar- shall’s report sometime in March or April. “If the report comes back saying cease and desist, I guess that’s medi- cine we'll have to swallow.”’ Hill says the department is now pul- ting together it’s business plan, and until that’s complete, they won't know whether or not they'll have to appeal to people in Jackpine Flats, Old Remo and Lalelse Lake for more money. SUPPORTED CHILD CARE City council will be meeting with BC Tel representatives in approximately two weeks to see if there is any alterna- live to the loss of 24 local jobs. Dave Borden and Sharon DaSilva from the telecom- munications union spoke toa council committee on Friday to ask that the meeting be made open to the public, Coun- cillor Ruth Hallock told them that was a decision which would have to be made by the whole council, but didn’t sce why the meeting would have to be in camera. Eleven of the jobs the phone company plans to climinate in Terrace are those of service representatives. Borden and DaSilva suggested that if the phone company cannot keep those positions, there are others people here are equally qualified to do, and that could be done out of Terrace, Terrace Area with the purchase — of regular ' A&W Fries Polustax of Onion Rings.
