B8 ferrace Review — Wednesday, April 25, £990 Learning French in France On June 25, Northwest Com- munity College has provided the avenue for nine Terrace residents and one student from the Fraser Valley College to ‘travel to France to study French. Secondary students Lisa Chen- Wing and Jason Krause, North- west Community College stu- dents Charmaine Anderson, Eric Bergsma, Julie Krause, Anne Kantankis, UBC student Pam Jakobs, Kiti-K’shan teacher Lynda Millar and Fraser Valley College student Jackie Turner will live with French families and study French in Angers, France until July 29. NWCC French instructor Jo Patterson initiated the trip after a teachers’ study tour to Angers in the Loire Valley in 1988. Jo sees this as an opportunity for the participants to make “‘leaps in language’, studying 21 hours per week, living with French families and taking excursions to the annual theater festival, ‘‘The Festival d’Anjou’’. She liked the organization of the Universite Catholique de Ouest and the location. The university has a long-standing reputation as an international educational institute. Fifty na- tionalities will be represented at this year’s French summer school. Jo also felt there was a strong core of local students four to progress with their language learning. Classes are divided into 21 levels, Each student will be re- quired to take a placement test upon arrival at the university. Jo’s role will be to help with class and family placements, and to deal with changes in place- ment as required. The University of Victoria has agreed to full accreditation for the course, UBC requires a placement test for credit, and Simon Fraser has yet to notify the college of their decision. The first week of the study tour will take place in Paris. Jo Patterson will be an active tour guide in Paris ‘“‘even if only one person wants to go. It’s my favorite city and I look forward to the opportunity to share it.’ Patterson has had six in-depth visits to Paris. She feels travel should be in-depth to get the full benefit. Jo has been stressing that the students get involved in rhythms by observing people of other cultures and also some of the mannerisms in Our own culture. There will be brief in- formation given on culture shock, although Jo doesn’t think it will be a problem, The students will. be attending school, so they’ll be in a basical- ly familiar environment. missed the orientations to date because she has been away at university. This is Pam’s first ex- change experience, although she has travelled before. She took-a French course at UBC this year to maintain and improve upon the French she learned at NWCC. Pam had been saving money for travel, and after hear- ing about the study tour to Angers, decided that it would be. ¢ the best use for her travel fund. Pam will be home this spring as soon as her university exams are | completed so that she can find work until the June 25 departure date. She is going into theater studies at UBC this fall, so is looking forward to the theater excursions possible near Angers. The group will travel with a Camcorder and record the highlights of their trip, including the finish of the Tour de France bicycle race. Anne Kantankis, one of the participants in the program, has a son competing in it. All the travel arrangements for this study tour have been made by George Clark of Ter- race Travel, Jo Patterson en- - courages any individuals who want to travel independently or do study tours to contact North- west Community College or - George Clark for more informa- CHURCH DIRECTORY The path of the just is as the shining light, that shin- eth more and more unto the perfect day.
